Thai marriage recognized abroad?

Marriage Certificate in Thailand

I am married to a Thai and we are moving back to my home country. I was wondering about our marriage registration abroad. Is the Thai marriage registration recognized abroad?

Thai marriage registration is not only recognized under Thai law but also in the foreigner’s country of nationality. Once marriage is registered in Thailand, these documents are yet to be translated and legalized at the Ministry of Foreign affairs for them to be used abroad.

There are some countries which would require a report of marriage in their home countries or certification from respective embassies in Thailand to keep the marriage valid and recognized all over the world.

I am a HK national planning to marry a Thai national. If we register our marriage in Hong Kong, can I use the HK marriage certificate and apply for a Thai marriage visa in the Thai consulate office in HK?

      Dear Venus,
Yes, you are able to use the HK marriage certificate for the Non-immigrant O visa and Thai marriage visa application. You need to make sure that this certificate has been certified by Thai consulate in HK before coming back to Thailand because you need to report this marriage to the Thai spouse’s hometown in Thailand. The home district will then issue Kor Ror 22 which you will need for the Thai immigration when you apply for the marriage visa. Thank you.

Is a Thai village marriage that has not been registered with the Thai authorities recognized as a valid marriage?

The Buddhist Thai weddings are not legally binding. The marriage that is recognized as legal marriage is the marriage or contract made before the registrar at the amphur.

Once you have registered your marriage legally in Thailand, it is recognized as legal as well in other countries. With regards to her losing her visa, you will need to get in touch with Malaysian authorities to find out about their rules regarding the specific visa she currently holds and if she will lose this by being married to another foreigner.
