Tourist Visa for Thailand

(Updated December 21, 2021)

Thailand has closed all its borders in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19 in most of 2020 under the invocation of the Emergency Decree. At present, Thailand has opened the country to foreign travelers and tourists. Now, fully vaccinated travelers, both Thai and foreigners, are allowed to enter Thailand without quarantine under the Test and Go Program or the Phuket Sandbox Program. However, the mandatory quarantine of 10 days is still required for both unvaccinated travelers and 14 days for those traveling from African countries.

      Dear Veronica,
      Good day.
For the Thai nationals, COVID 19 insurance is not required. The only requirement is that they do the COE before coming to Thailand.
Please check this website to know more about COE application for Thai nationals:

Hi, I’m a Chinese citizen and live in the USA right now. Can I ask some questions:
    1. Can I get Visa on Arrival in Thailand in May.
    2. Do I need to apply for COE for Visa on Arrival? If so, what types of permitted persons should I select?
    3. If Visa on Arrival doesn’t work for me, what type of visa could I apply for since I was neither a student nor employed. (currently graduated from University)

    • April 19, 2021

      Dear Shuo,
      Good day.
      Please see my comments below:
      1. No, the visa on arrival for Chinese and some nationalities have been suspended. So you need to apply for the 60-day tourist visa and COE.
      2. COE is required to enter Thailand. In your case, you need 60-day TR visa and COE issued by Thai Embassy in the USA.

If you are fully vaccinated and you have the vaccination certificates, yes, you can quarantine at an ASQ hotel in Bangkok for 7 days and travel to another province after that.

I will be arriving to Thailand later this year. I noticed that starting Oct 1, 2021, the quarantine will be lifted for travelers arriving in Phuket and Krabi. I wanted to know if this applies if you are flying into BKK then flying directly to Phuket. Is this possible? If you land in BKK even if you dont leave the airport, do you have to go to a quarantine hotel?

    • April 20, 2021

      Dear Zac,
      Good day.
The lifted quarantine in Phuket and Krabi is only applicable if you book a flight directly to Phuket or Krabi. For example, you book a flight with transit in Singapore and flies directly to Phuket. You must avoid Bangkok, otherwise, you must quarantine in Bangkok.
      Thank you.

    Hi!
Is it mandatory to attach the confirmation to both the flight to and the return flight from the Kingdom for the last step of the COE process?

I might have a real problem:
I am going on a 45-day, visa-exempt trip to Thailand, with departure in a week from now.
I got the pre-confirmation of COE last week and just now filled in the remaining information: ASQ confirmation and Flight confirmation.

I booked a oneway flight to Thailand and another oneway return flight with another airline.

HOWEVER: I forgot to attach the return-flight confirmation!!! I only attached the oneway flight confirmation for the flight to Thailand in the COE form.
I sent an email right away with the confirmation of the return flight, but I have a feeling that I would need to pre-register for a whole new COE in case I would have had to attach the return flight too.

QUESTION: Is it mandatory to attach the return flight confirmation for the last step of the COE process?
Really grateful for a quick answer here…..

    Greetings from Germany!
    Chris

    • March 29, 2021

      Dear Chris,
If you are already on the Part 2 or Stage 2 of the process, you only need to attached the flight to Thailand. Although there has been cases that the application was rejected on the second stage because the return flight was not attached. I believe you will be alright. I think it will be approved.
      Thank you.

Hello @thaiembassy. I’m currently in an ASQ two days into my stay. On the embassy website it’s said the new rules effective April 1 include “travellers are allowed to undertake activities outside of their rooms under certain conditions such as using the gym and the swimming pool, exercising outdoors and ordering food and goods from outside”. Do you know where I can find a detailed official government announcement outlining what the “certain conditions” are? Our hotel is not allowing us to do this.

    • April 19, 2021

      Dear Holiday,
      Good day.
At this time, this might have changed due to the current COVID 19 situation. Normally after 5 days and you are tested negative, you will be allowed to go to a special area of the hotel for an hour.
      Thank you.

    Dear Rex,

First and foremost, I am sure i speak for everyone who has visited this site and say thank you for the tremendous effort in providing valuable information and guidance, It is amazing to see how many scenarios are out there and how different they are.

Like everybody else i am looking at returning to Thailand to reunite with my wife, however my situation i feel is quite different and from what i read going through all the posts, may be a challenge from where i am situated.
I am quite familiar with the entry procedure as i managed to get a repatriation flight home to my wife in August 2020, at that stage i was in Australia on business and therefore it was quite straight forward and was issued a single-entry non-immigrant type O visa by the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra.

I am now currently situated in Tahiti, French Polynesia again due to work
and have noted the closest Thai Embassy to me now is the Royal Thai Embassy, Wellington New Zealand.
I am a South African Passport Holder and fortunately hold a New Zealand permanent residence, however in the hope to avoid the more than likely inevitable situation of having to fly to New Zealand, do the required 14 day quarantine there, then apply for my COE and non-immigrant O visa, and if approved flight to Thailand for yet another 14 day quarantine, i would like to pose the question as to whether or not i have any other options available to me?

I noted in your replies above that Visas on arrival have been suspended for the time being, is that still in place now?

If so would there be a possibility for me to post all required documents to the Royal Thai Embassy in Wellington? instead of flying and doing it in person (probably a question to pose to them directly but i am trying to exhaust all other options first)

If i have any other options available to me i would be eternally grateful if you were able to share them with me.

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance and look forward to hearing back from you soon

    • January 12, 2021

      Dear Clinton,
Thank you for your email. Yes, you can qualify for the 45 days visa exemption which is in effect until September 30, 2021.
My only concern is to where you will apply for the COE. What will be your flight to Thailand look like? What will be the itinerary so that I know where to apply for the COE and the application is done online and the COE will be issued to you by email.
      Have a good day.

    • January 13, 2021

      Hello Rex,
Thank you for your prompt reply and information therein.
My only option to fly any where in the world from French Polynesia would be through LAX(USA) first and then onto Bangkok via Doha more than likely, as this is the same route i took when flying from Bangkok to Tahiti.
My only real concern with going the route of the 45 day exemption visa on arrival is that i would only get 31 days in Thailand after my 14 day quarantine, my intentions would be to stay in Thailand with my wife for 90 days before having to return to work.
Is it possible to apply for the Non-immigrant type O spouse visa once i am in Thailand if i arrived on the 45 day exemption Visa?

Thank you again for your assistance and advise.

    • January 13, 2021

      Dear Clinton,
      Good day.
The 45 days that you will get can be extended within Thailand. It can be extended for 30 days or 60 days (if you have Thai spouse). Yes, it is possible to change to Non O visa within the country especially in Bangkok.
      Thank you.

When you fly out of Thailand, it might take awhile before you can return to Thailand. Please note that Non-RE Retirement visa is not on the list of groups allowed to enter Thailand. As you can see, there are still people who have retirement visas (not the OA visas) who cannot return to Thailand. It might happen to you also.

We’ve been separated for 8 months and are looking at Thailand as a place where we can both go to reunite.
Can you please advise if STV or TR is a possible option for our situation?

If it is, do we need to apply via travel agencies (some of them are not very responsive and are asking for passport scan before they even start talking to us which does not sound very secure) or can this be done directly via Thailand embassies?

So I’m assuming any of those two pieces of documents will do?

    • October 31, 2020

      Dear Collin,
      Good day.
The WP3 letter is issued by MOL only if the company is already operating. If you are coming to buy the company, WP3 should not be required. However, another letter may be required but it is not clear which government office (not MOL) will this letter be issued or obtained.

      Dear Rune,
      Good day.
Firstly, you cannot get certificate of permanent residence because retirement visa is not permanent residency.
The application for the COE is done at a Thai embassy. If there is no Thai embassy in the country where you will go, you may either cancel the trip or you get the COE at the Thai Embassy near the country where you will be staying.
The main issue here now, is your current visa qualified to re-enter Thailand? It is not OA or OX visa.

What if I’m living in Thailand since January 2020, and I’m studying with an Ed visa, so I’m italian but I’m living in thai since before the pandemic crisis and I want to continue studying in 2021? According to law I have to move from thailand after 365 days of permanance, what do I have to do if I want to continuing study here? I’m 24 and I’m a student! Thank you early for the answer ☺️🙏🏻

    Hello, Rex,

I applied for a Business visa the 2nd of this month and was called by the Thai embassy in Washington DC only to be told they cannot give the visa for my already established business on paper in Bangkok. Reason being I do not have a letter from the ministry of labor or WP3/Work permit. I am curious as to why this occurred because on September 28th as you know, the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) approved reopening the country’s borders to welcome foreign visitors, both short and long term such as the following:

-Holders of non-immigrant B visa, who are businesspeople (without a work permit or WP3) and are willing to enter Thailand for business purposes.

This has been a major setback for me with my business plans. Any advice or suggestions?

If the applicant is holding a non immigrant O visa based on having Thai spouse, he or she can apply for work permit. If the applicant is holding a Non immigrant O visa with a foreign spouse, he or she cannot get a work permit.
If the applicant has no work permit, it is illegal to work in Thailand without it.

I think it’s better to enter Thailand using APEC, that removes the hassle of applying for visa. As per your advice, apply for Work Permit & Non Immigrant B visa after entering Thailand.

Using APEC card to enter Thailand, how long can I stay in Thailand? Is quarantine in ASQ still required?

    Thanks again

    • October 22, 2020

      Dear Chen,
The APEC card will allow you to stay for 90 days. You still have to apply for the COE from the Thai Embassy. You still have to provide travel insurance and you need to do 14-day quarantine.

Right now, coming to Thailand as a tourist is only through the Special Tourist Visa program and unfortunately it is not available at the Thai Embassy in London due to the COVID-19 cases in the UK.

Interesting that this information (Holders of non-immigrant B visa, who are business people {without a work permit or WP3} and are willing to enter Thailand for business purposes) has been out since September 28 from the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) approving additional foreign visitors, both short and long term to enter the country and yet the Thai embassy in Washington DC returned my packet two days ago (October 19th) because I don’t have a work permit yet. I’ve already invested a few thousand dollars through a company there (SERVCORP) to register my business which did happen and all else are in place, yet here i am back at square one with nothing to show but the thousands of dollars i spent.

    • October 29, 2020

      Dear Collin,
      Good day.
Perhaps there is a discrepancy in the invitation letter or sponsorship letter. if the purpose of visa application is employment, you need to have WP3 from the Labour Office in Thailand.
If the purpose of visit that was stated is business meeting, you need also another letter from a government office in Thailand.
      Thank you.

May I know what visa can I apply to enter Thailand? I see some commercial flights available from China to Bangkok. Can I book and travel on commercial flight, instead of charter flight?

The APEC card holder can apply for the certificate of entry from the Thai Embassy. You do not need to apply for the visa. As for the flights, you need to coordinate with the embassy to learn which flights have been permitted to land in Thailand/

    Dear Rex,
I posted my question last week, it was initially under moderation, and then somehow it disappeared.

I am currently in Sichuan province of China, I hold APEC card & singapore passport. I am in the midst of registering Thai company with Thai partners. My fiancee is holding Myanmar passport, with Work Permit in Bangkok.

We plan to register our marriage in May 2020, but due to the lock-down, we are unable to even meet, not to mention register marriage.

With my / our current locations & documents, may I know what type of visa should I apply to enter Bangkok?

Assuming my visa application & COE is approved, can I book commercial flight to enter Bangkok? I see some commercial flights from China to Bangkok.

    • October 21, 2020

      Dear Chen,
Good day. We apologise for the delayed reply.
First, you cannot book a commercial flight. The flight must be chartered, repatriation or semi-commercial flight with 100% approval from Thai Embassy in China only. You need to get in touch with the Thai embassy to see the list of approved flights.
You can come to Thailand being an APEC Card member, you do not need to apply for visa but you need to apply for the COE. But you might have a hard getting it since you are not Chinese. But feel free to call Thai Embassy directly. If they do not answer calls, please check if you can visit them directly to get the information.
At the moment, we only provide visa and COE service for UK and USA passengers to Thailand.

If you no longer have a valid non-immigrant OA visa, you may also apply for a new visa. Dear Ben,
      Good day.
Thai nationals are required to undergo a 14-day quarantine. They can choose the state quarantine which is free or they can choose the ASQ hotel which they have to pay on their own.
      Thank you.

Im planning on traveling for business to Phuket on my APEC business card in November, Will I have to quarantine on arrival? Thanks

    • October 13, 2020

      Dear Will,
      Good day.
Thank you for your message. Regarding your inquiry, APEC Card Holders are permitted to enter Thailand during this global pandemic. Just like other Thai visa holders, you need to do the following:
      1. Obtain COE from Thai Embassy.
      2. Obtain Fit to Fly certificate and COVID-19 PCR test
      3. COVID-19 Health Insurance
      4. Book a repatriation or chartered flight
      5. Book an ASQ Hotel: See the list here https://www.thaiembassy.com/travel/alternative-state-quarantine-asq-in-thailand.php
      6. Mandatory Quarantine for 14 days
      Thank you.

Rex, You’re answering all questions except mine. We’re unable to get opening date of Chennai (City in India) embassy for applying Non-B employment visa. Appreciate your valuable input please.

    • October 9, 2020

      Dear Karthik,
The information that you require cannot be answered by us. We are not the Thai Consulate in Chennai. India has high infection rate, I am not sure if the Thai consulate in Chennai will open or not for visa applications. All I know is that There still many Thais who are returning from India to Thailand.
Again, we recommend that you call Thai Embassy in Chennai.
      Thank you.

I am an American living in Thailand with my American husband and younger daughter. We did not leave Thailand during the Covid closures. We have remained here under our current and valid Non-O visa. We have another daughter attending university in the States but she was unable to come home to Thailand during the summer because of Covid and now we have been apart for too long. We would really like for our daughter to come home. Can she travel to Thailand as our child on our visa? She is still our dependent and is 19 years old.

    • November 4, 2020

      Dear Julie,
      Good day.
May I confirm that your visas, Non Immigrant O visa are based on your child studying in Thailand or do you have working visa? If you’re working now in Thailand, your daughter in the USA may apply for the Non Immigrant O dependant visa.
      Thank you.

I have a marriage visa and wife and children in Thailand.
I cannot contact the Thai Consulate in London so far, as they have not answered the phone.
Is there a direct email I can use. I have the correct visa but need to apply for the COE but cannot find where to apply.

    Thank you

    • October 9, 2020

      Dear John,
      Good day.
If you already have a non immigrant O visa that is still valid to enter Thailand, you can apply for the COE now. You can sign up using this page:

    Hi there,

I am a Thai national returning to Thailand from the UK next week. It is unclear to me if I have to provide both a fit to fly letter and covid-19 test results. Does the fit to fly letter have to clearly state I don’t have any symptoms etc? Surely I need to do a test in order to obtain a fit to fly letter?

    • October 9, 2020

      Dear Kaleigh,
In the US, Fit-to-Fly certificate does not require a COVID-19 test for a Thai national. I am not sure about the UK. Please contact the Thai Embassy in London for more information.
      Thank you.

I hold a New Zealand Passport and an APEC Business Card and am currently in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Do you know if it is possible to travel by land and cross the border into Thailand instead of flying? My destination is Phuket, so the intention would be to carry on to Phuket and do any required quarantine there – is that something can be booked online?

    • November 5, 2020

      Dear Regan,
      Good day.
Unfortunately it is not possible to travel by land. It is possible to travel by air and in special circumstance, it is possible to travel by a private yacht.
      Thank you.
