Top 20 Questions on Thailand Pass

I am an expat leaving Thailand for a short time and returning. Do I have to apply for Thailand Pass and Test & Go?

Yes. At this time, all people entering Thailand must apply for a Thailand Pass and follow Test & Go requirements if they are fully vaccinated. This includes having the required entry requirements such as insurance, SHA+ hotel booking, RT-PCR test, and Thailand Pass approval.

I am an expat returning to Thailand. Can I quarantine at home instead of a hotel?

No. No matter what visa you hold in Thailand, you must follow the Test & Go entry requirements. You must spend 1 night in a SHA+ quarantine hotel while waiting for your RT-PCR test result.

Have the April 1 changes to pre-departure RT-PCR testing come into effect?

Yes. Pre-departure RT-PCR tests are no longer required when entering Thailand.

Has the April 1 change come into effect for the Sandbox scheme?

Yes. The Sandbox scheme now requires only 5 nights of quarantine in the Sandbox designated area. Visitors must now do 1 x RT-PCR test and 1 x ATK test on day 5 instead of 2 x RT-PCR tests. The Test & Go program is a better option for those who are fully vaccinated.

Have the April 1 changes come into effect for the un-vaccinated Alternate Quarantine scheme?

Yes. The Alternate Quarantine timeframe has been reduced from 10 nights to 5 nights. You still need to have 2 x RT-PCR tests during this time. The tests will be taken on Day 1 and on Day 4 or 5.

I booked a 10-day Alternate Quarantine package but I am arriving after April 1. What should I do with the new changes?

You may contact your hotel. If you have not arrived in Thailand before April 1, you are eligible for the updated 5-day Alternate Quarantine scheme. Your hotel will advise what options are available to you.

Do I need to print my Thailand Pass documents for when I arrive at Passport Control in Thailand?

Yes. It is the best practice as you will present these documents to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

If you only have digital copies and something happens to your electronic device, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

How do I present my Thailand Pass QR code if my mobile phone is not working?

You should print a hard copy of your Thailand Pass QR code. If your mobile device does not work in Thailand, you can still present the QR code to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

Can I upload my Thailand Pass QR code to the MorChana App before I arrive in Thailand?

No. You can download the MorChana App before arriving in Thailand, but it will not allow uploads until you arrive in the country. You may ask your SHA+ hotel staff to assist you on how to navigate the app.

If I land in Phuket with the correct insurance, my SHA+ hotel, airport transfer, and separate RT-PCR tests booked, can I apply for Test & Go?

Yes. The above requirements are required to apply for Test & Go and Thailand Pass. You will also need to be vaccinated to apply for Test & Go.

Have the April 1 changes affected domestic flights in Thailand?

No. When landing in Thailand, domestic flights on arrival must still be approved “sealed” flights. Please check with Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways for the new list of sealed flights to Phuket and Samui.

Can I do my Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya?

Yes. If you land in Bangkok you can organize Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya. Your SHA+ hotel must provide transport from Bangkok airport to the hotel.

If your flight lands directly at Pattaya airport you will do your RT-PCR test at the airport and then be transported to your hotel.

Are international flights landing in Pattaya?

There are flights now landing directly at Pattaya U-tapao International Airport. Check with your airline provider for available direct flights.

Can I take a domestic flight from Bangkok to Pattaya for Test & Go quarantine?

Only if the flight is an approved “sealed” flight. This should be booked as part of your international flight itinerary.

If you book separate domestic flights, you are required to quarantine for 1 night in Bangkok before traveling to Pattaya.

What SHA+/AQ hotels are available in Pattaya?

You can find the latest information for SHA+/AQ hotels in Pattaya at Agoda.

Why is my US credit card being rejected when trying to book my RT-PCR test?

There is an issue with www.thailandpsas.com approving transactions with American credit cards. You can contact your hotel and they will organize the RT-PCR test booking for you.

I am trying to book hotel transport in Phuket with an American credit card and it is rejected. What can I do?

Transport from the airport to your hotel should be included in your SHA+ quarantine package. If there is an issue booking your hotel with an American credit card, try a different card or purchase through PayPal.

My hotel in Phuket does not offer transport from the hotel. What should I do?

Any SHA+/AQ hotel should include transport from the airport to their hotel. If they do not offer this service, it is best to look at different hotels because you cannot organize private transport.

Where can I see if hotel transfer is included in Phuket when looking at Agoda?

Many Phuket hotels do not list Airport Transfer on their front page. Click into the hotel and look at the bottom left corner of the details page. Airport transfer will be listed here under services offered.

How do I book a private transfer from the airport to a hotel in Phuket?

You cannot. Transfer from Phuket airport to your hotel must be provided by the hotel so it meets all Covid safety measures.

COVID-19 Thailand Visa Amnesty/Extension

What is a visa amnesty or COVID extension?

It is the visa relief or 60-day visa extension for all foreign nationals staying in Thailand affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Foreigners can apply for a COVID extension at any immigration office until March 25, 2022.

Who are covered by the visa amnesty or COVID extension?

All foreign nationals who are legally staying in Thailand whether you are here on visa exemption entry stamps and tourist visas. The holders of non-immigrant visas, or yearly extension of stays are not eligible for the COVID extension.

What are the current implementing rules regarding the visa amnesty or COVID extension?

  • Visas or permits to stay that are still valid and updated by the local Thai immigration office.
  • Foreigners holding a long-term visa such as a working visa, marriage visa, or retirement are required to apply for their yearly extension at the Thai immigration office as usual.
  • Foreigners do not need any embassy letter to be granted the automatic visa extension due to COVID-19.

Is the COVID-19 visa extension free of charge?

The COVID-19 extension of the visa costs 1,900 Thai baht.

Will the visa amnesty be extended?

The validity of the visa amnesty is until March 25, 2022 only. There is no indication that this visa amnesty or grace period will be extended.

What will happen when the visa amnesty is lifted or not extended anymore?

When the situation is resolved and returns to normal, foreigners must leave Thailand on or before the permit to stay date in their passports or they must apply for the proper another type of visa at the immigration office.

90-Day Reporting

If you are a foreigner staying in Thailand for a period longer than 90 consecutive days holding a Non-Immigrant Visa or Extension of Stay, you are required by Thai Immigration to report your current address every 90 days. You may file for the TM47 notification in person, by mail, online, or by an agent. Please check this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/90-day-reporting-immigration.php

Consequences of Visa Overstay

During this COVID-19 crisis in Thailand, some foreign nationals may find themselves overstaying in Thailand, do so by mistake, by miscalculating the length of their stay, forgetting their visa expiration date, or by unforeseen cancellation of their flights due to travel restrictions. As a traveler, you should strongly avoid overstaying in Thailand, but if you do find yourself in Thailand on an expired visa it is very important that you act fast and in the right way. Please check this page to learn more of the consequences of overstaying in Thailand: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/overstay-visa-thailand.php

Frequently Asked Questions

To extend a tourist visa, do I need to visit the Thai immigration office in person? I do not want to go to crowded areas at risk of COVID-19 infection.

Yes, there have been no changes regarding the visa extension application whether it is your first time to extend or the second time to extend. The application is still done in person. Thai immigration offices are practicing different measures such as social distancing and disinfecting the area to make sure that the applicants are not at risk of contracting the COVID-19. You might want to see if your local Thai immigration is open on Saturdays. That is a less crowded day of the week to visit the immigration office.

I have tried online reporting and reporting through a mobile app, both attempts failed. What are my other options?

If the online and mobile app reporting does not work, you need to do the reporting by yourself or you can ask a visa agent or third party to do the 90-day address reporting. You need to provide a power of attorney and the 90-day reporting documents such as the original and copy of the passport. There is no immigration fee for address reporting.

Is it required by law to wear a face mask?

The emergency decree issued by the Thai Government that came into effect recommends everyone wear a face mask when they are outside of their residence. However, some provinces such as Phuket have their own rule and you will be subject to a penalty. In Bangkok, commuters are required to wear a face mask when using public transportation and while in public places.

Should I carry my passport at all times?

Yes. If you are a foreigner and you will be out of your residence or hotel, you need to carry your passport especially right now that there are random checks to check the visa validity. It is also good to know that there are banks that would not allow you to enter the premises if you have traveled recently abroad, so it is best to have your passport with you at all times.

I am aware of the entry requirements for foreigners entering Thailand, is there special consideration for those traveling with my Thai family or visiting my Thai family?

At the moment, you can enter Thailand. You just have to make sure that you have obtained a Thailand Pass, purchased COVID-19 Insurance, had a COVID-19 test and you will undergo a mandatory Test and Go or ASQ quarantine.

I have a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit expiring on April 24, due to my country’s travel restriction I cannot return to Thailand to renew it. What are my options?

If your country does not allow you to travel to Thailand or if your country of departure is under the travel ban, I regret to inform you that there is nothing you are able to do. It is not possible to renew it while you are outside Thailand and it is also not possible to renew it at the Thai embassy in your country. Should your visa and work permit expire while you are outside Thailand, you need to apply for a new non-immigrant B visa for you to enter Thailand and after you have entered Thailand, you can apply for a new work permit.

When do I need the embassy letter for the COVID-19 visa extension?

As of writing, the embassy letter is no longer required by the immigration office to receive the 60-day COVID-19 extensions.

I am looking for flights from Laos to Europe and this requires me to transit in Thailand. Do I need a Health Certificate when transiting? There are multiple different articles including the one on Thai Airways stating that a Health Certificate is required for transiting passengers.

As of writing, international passengers including transiting passengers are required to present a COVID-19 health certificate and negative COVID test result. If you are affected by this travel requirement, you may opt to postpone your travel or you may opt to book a flight that will not transit through Thailand. For the latest update, it is best to contact your airline.

I am a US citizen traveling from the US to Thailand via Hong Kong, am I subject to mandatory quarantine?

No, the mandatory quarantine is not required for any foreigner and Thai travelers entering Thailand via Hong Kong if you are fully vaccinated. You may apply for Thailand Pass under the Test and Go program. The mandatory 10-day quarantine is only required for unvaccinated travelers from any country.

I’m a French national. I have 60 days tourist visa, which is ending soon, but due to COVID-19, I am kind of reluctant to travel back to France. Is there any way that I can extend my visa for another 30 days?

Yes, any nationality holding a 60-day tourist visa entry stamp can extend for 30 days at the local immigration office. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport-size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 card, TM30 receipt from your hotel, and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

I am British and I entered Thailand on holiday on March 3 and am scheduled to leave on April 1. If my flight is canceled due to COVID-19, I may be forced to overstay my 30 days permit to stay until I have a rescheduled flight. Is this ok? If not, what should I do?

You are able to extend this 30-day visa exemption stamp for another 30 days at the local Thai immigration office. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport-size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 card, TM30 receipt from your hotel, and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

I am an American and I have a 30-day visa exemption that I extended for an extra 30 days. My current extension will expire on April 1, 2021. What are my options to stay in Thailand due to the travel restriction in other countries?

You have two options: 1.) You can extend your current extension for 30 days at your local immigration office. 2.) You can request a COVID-19 extension and you will be given a 60 days extension at your local Thai immigration office.

I have a non-immigrant O visa for having a Thai wife. It is a single entry visa. My 90-day entry stamp will expire in April and the money in my account has not seasoned yet for 2 months. What can I do?

Since you are legally married to a Thai national, you can apply for a 60-day extension for having a Thai wife. This extension will give you enough time for your funds to season for 2 months. After your funds have seasoned for 2 months, you may apply for a 1-year extension or marriage visa.

My work permit and my visa will expire by the end of the month. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, I am not able to return to my country. What are my options?

Since your visa and your work permit will expire, your only option for an extension of your stay in Thailand is to file for the 60-day COVID extension. You may apply for this extension on the last day of your permit to stay.

I am flying from the USA to Thailand via Hong Kong. Do I still need to present a health certificate and travel insurance?

At the moment, passengers entering Thailand need to obtain the Thailand Pass, purchase a COVID-19 insurance, book Test and Go Hotel for 1 night, or an ASQ Hotel for the 10-day quarantine (if not vaccinated), and obtain a COVID-19 medical certificate.

Can anyone advise what to do regarding my Non-B visa? My Non-B expired on 4th March. I have to pay a fine of 500 baht per day for overstay. The borders around Thailand are closed for me to renew it. I have requested a 30-day extension but was refused. They need my new contract for the new year. This is costing me an arm and a leg. What are my solutions?

The best solution for this is to avoid overstaying so that you will not get in trouble in the future. If you do not have a new contract from the school it is imperative for you to return to your home country until you have a new contract and apply for a new visa from the Thai embassy there. Once you have secured a new non-immigrant B visa, you may return to Thailand together with a copy of the health certificate and health insurance. Another option is to request a COVID extension while you are preparing the documents for your non-immigrant B visa. Some immigration offices are now issuing non-immigrant B visas.

I am a U.S. citizen. I arrived in Bangkok last March 9. My flight to Manila has been canceled on April 8. I am in Pattaya. Do I need a US embassy letter to extend my 45-day Travel Visa? Or can I just go to the Thai Immigration office in Pattaya to get an extension due to COVID-19?

No, you do not need an embassy letter at this time. Your current 45-day visa exemption stamp can be extended for an additional 30 days. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 card, TM30 receipt from your hotel and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

    2. Do I need to present a RTPCR report?
    3. Any other requirement at my end.
    Thanks

      Dear Sandeep,
      Good day.
For this inquiry, please contact the airline if there will be special requirements. If you are not going to disembark the plane, it is likely that you do not need the visa, COVID test and insurance.

      Dear Meriel,
If you will be on the same aircraft then it is not a problem. But if you will exit the plane and go to another flight, you cannot do that. You need to quarantine in Bangkok.

Hello, I am currently in ASQ and am scheduled to leave quarantine on the 25th January. I have a three month visa, and my return flight to Ireland is on 6th April.

The visa issued by my Embassy is until the 20 March; although for some reason the immigration officer stamped it until the 10 March only.

My flight back to Ireland is in April. I thought that the three months would start counting from when I arrived in Thailand, not from the day that my visa was issued.

Do you know if I am entitled to the same visa extension as everyone else who has already been in Thailand since the lockdown began? They have been given extensions until the end of March.

Is there any way I can extend my stay from 10 March for a month.

    Kind Regards,
    James

    • January 19, 2021

      Dear James,
      Good day.
Your visa sticker is valid to be used until March 20, 2021 however, when you arrive in Thailand, you were given 60-day entry stamp until March 10, 2021. You may extend this stamp for 30 days at your local immigration office for a fee of 1,900 THB.
      Thank you.

    Hello,

I am seeing some inconsistency online regarding the Covid PCR Test to enter Thailand. I understand there is a requirement to produce an undetectable COVID-19 laboratory result “issued” within 72 hours prior flight.

To be clear, this means the result issuance date must be with 72 hours of departure? Or, is the requirement that the actual test date/time must be with 72 hours of departure?

My local clinic sends samples to a private laboratory, which takes up to 48 hours to issue results, so I may take the actual test more than 72 hours before departure to ensure I leave enough time to receive results… just wanted to be sure this meets the requirement.

    • January 10, 2021

      Dear Madeleine,
      Good day.
The actual test must be within 72 hours.

The main issue is long stay visa support as in Russia now Thai embassy do not issue tourist visas at all. What is the case with Thai embassy in Lithuania – I will know only tomorrow as today they have been closed, but even in good time they were able to issue only 30 days tourist visa…..

    • November 3, 2020

      Dear Chayabhatra,
      Good day.
I regret to inform you that we cannot advise you about the visa issuance in Russia or Lithuania. Please do contact them directly by email, phone call or in person (if possible).
      Thank you.

    Hello,

Do you have any special regulations about Thai nationals who would want to fly home to Thailand from Europe? (Norway to be specific). Do they need to be in quarantine somewhere when they land or do a swab test? Or if you have a link that you can redirect me with answers to these specific questions, please let me know.

Thank you in advance for your help! 🙂

      Dear Khristin,
      Good day.
For the Thai nationals who needs to go home to Thailand, they must call the Thai Embassy in Norway. It is difficult to get the information applicable to the Thais because it is posted in Thai and mostly the information posted on their website are for the foreigners coming to Thailand. Please call +4790136815.
      Thank you.

    • November 4, 2020

      Dear Avgi,
      Good day.
The applicant must have more than 3 years of a Thai marriage visa issued and renewed at the local immigration office every year. May I ask if you have a marriage visa for more than 3 years? Do you work in Thailand? Do you have children?
      Thank you.

Rex Thank you for your answer. To your question I have been married for 7 years. Visa retirement. I have no children. I do not work Thank you and a pleasant weekend

    • November 9, 2020

      Dear Avgi,
Thank you for your reply. If you have a retirement visa, this will not qualify. You need to change to marriage visa and renew it every year for at least 3 years so that you will qualify for the PR application.
      Have a good day.

    • November 8, 2020

      Dear Mark,
      Good day.
May I ask where are you located right now? If you are in the USA right now, there is a normal 60-day tourist visa that you can obtain from the Thai Embassy.
Should you need any assistance, please let us know.

    Hello,

I’m a british citizen who has been working in Thailand for a year now.

My non-b visa and work permit will expire on December the 4th. But it does not give me the time needed to get all my affairs in order. I’m wondering if it’s possible to extend my stay in Thailand and apply for a tourist visa in advance or do i need to apply once the non-b visa and work permit are cancelled.

As the situation in the UK isn’t good in regards to covid and I need time to make plans to figure out what to do next.

    Thanks

    • November 4, 2020

      Dear Sanjeet,
      Good day.
When you visa and work permit expires on December 4th, on the same day, you can apply for the 7 days extension to get your affairs in order. Perhaps, if you can present a letter or request for a COVID 19 extension, you may be given 30 days or 60 days extension.
      Thank you.

    Hi,
From what I read, it looks like I can’t re-enter Thailand after leaving it with an active non-O retirement visa – for now.

I may have a pressing personal matter to settle in my home country and should return to my residence in Chiang Mai after about one month, taking into consideration the quarantine requirements in both countries.

Is there any other option for me to re-enter Thailand, besides waiting for the covid re-entry restrictions to be further relaxed?

    • October 31, 2020

      Dear David,
      Good day.
If you have a retirement visa that is category O visa, I recommend not to leave Thailand because you will not be able to return. As you can see, only type OA retirement visa will be allowed to return. So if you leave Thailand, you will have to get a non immigrant OA visa from the Thai embassy and apply for COE as well.
      Thank you.

      Helo Rex,

Thank you once again for your information about the O Visa now being issued from Tokyo. I have read the information, but it seems I need to be receiving a pension to apply for that visa – is it correct ?
I have substantially more money than that required, in my Australian account, however, it cannot be changed into a monthly pension style remittance account, until I can return to Australia, and do it in person – the vicious circle continues!
I also have the required amount in my SCB account, but they too,
will only give me an official, original statement (required by the embassy), if I come in person !!!!
Of course I have not been able to apply for the OA visa in Tokyo either, as nobody will answer the phone or respond to questions. It is important to clear up all problems, before submitting the documentation, as it can only be done about 10 days before a prepaid flight / ASQ hotel accommodation – a move which would make me homeless, as I must give 30 days notice to leave my current apartment.
At least if it were possible to speak with people at the Tokyo embassy, it would help, but it is always round and round with no solutions in sight. The embassy lists the visas and flights available but will not in anyway help those trying to jump though the hoops !! It’s getting crazy!! The reputation of the Land of Smiles is definitely waning….many have given up!! But I can’t because my worldly goods, and my condo is there (well, I hope it is still there – who knows!!)
I do so appreciate you always updating me, as it is too depressing to open the websites everyday and see new problems, unnecessary rules, and no solutions.

By the way – I did submit my passport info to Longstay company as requested, for the STV and received the following information on 9/2 :
“No problem, once we are able to start processing your visa, we will contact you immediately. We are still waiting for the approval of government regulation”.

      Yours Sincerely Armaj Sombunjaroen

That was two months ago and I have heard nothing!!!!!!

So tired, and exhausted by all the stress.

Thank you so very much for being the only person /company trying to assist those of us who have lost confidence, and a lot of money, through no fault of our own.
Have a good day – wish I were there in the warm sunshine.

      Dear Christine,
Yes, it is really difficult when the system of the application in the country where you are located is not good. I have had clients from UK and USA that I have been assisting on tourists visas and Non O visas. The process is very smooth and quite fast.
I wish I know how to do the application in Tokyo, I would be glad to assist you. But right now, I am only knowledgeable on US and UK online application.
      Thank you.

    Hello again Rex,

Sorry to bother you so soon, but wanted to tell you that the Thai embassy in Tokyo is finally offering visas OA and STV. I was very excited when after an hour, I managed to get a human on the line. However, my excitement faded when she very quickly told me she didn’t have time to listen – “just ask the question!!”(her comment) Ok – I did and she couldn’t answer well, because she did know why I was asking – but again told she had no time to listen to me – but didn’t offer an alternative time for a consultation…I was shocked and sad…but getting used it, I suppose. Anyway so many hoops to jump through. One being proof of money in Thailand – SCB told me they couldn’t issue a statement unless I came in person!! However, they said they could issue a “financial certificate document” – do you know if that would suffice, I dare not call again?
Also, flights etc must be paid for, and all documents presented – before they decide to issue the visa? No refund if refused !! But the hardest problem is that documents can only be presented about 10 days or less before the flight – but I would have to give a month’s notice on my apartment here. So, if the visa is not granted, I would be homeless! Is that normal? I was hoping to ask these questions, but as I said above, the woman on the phone was not interested in listening…
These Covid times are stressful for everybody, but surely embassy staff should be available to respond to fair and honest questions.
Anyway, I realize you can’t do much, however, I am sure there are other people who would like to know that the embassy here is finally issuing visas – but they should be aware that they will not be able to get much information if they have questions.
I hope the situation improves even more…at least something is happening.
    Thank you.

    • October 28, 2020

      Dear Christine,
      Good day.
I believe the financial document is either bank statement of your Thai or Japanese bank account. For the OA visa, it has to be 800,000 TH or for the STV it has to be 400,000 THB.
      Thank you.

    • Christine
      October 28, 2020

      Sorry Rex,

I have confused you…the visa requirements forms, ask for an original copy of my bank statement – I emailed my bank (SCB) and they cannot give an original bank statement unless I come in person. However, they offered to give me a “financial certificate document” but THEY don’t know if that would be accepted for a visa.
My question to you is such a document just as valid as an original bank statement if presenting for a visa? The bank asked me to check!! I have over 800,000 in my SCB account but no way of proving it from here.
The visa also asks for a financial statement from my home country – there is money there too! It is the validity of the document which I am worried about.
      Thank you.

    • October 28, 2020

      Dear Christine,
The only person who can answer this is the Thai Embassy staff. Due to current pandemic, will they accept emailed or scanned copies? In the UK the Thai embassy accepts scanned copies. I am not sure in Tokyo.
      Thank you.

      October 28, 2020

      Thank you once again Rex,

I will get the courage to call again perhaps tomorrow – hopefully a more friendly staff member will answer the phone. Today I was told only original copies – could not be emailed, must have bank seal – difficult with no airmail accepted between Australia and Japan right now.
      It’s a never-ending saga..

    • October 28, 2020

      Dear Christine,
Yes, it is really difficult when the embassy does not respond. I hope they will accept your documents and be able to get the visa and COE. At the moment I have been helping those coming from the UK, USA and AUS to get the visa and return to Thailand.

    Hello again Rex,

Thank you for your response to my email yesterday. However, I am confused? I am a resident of Japan not Australia! I have followed the requirements of the Longstay visa Company – sent my passport pages, my address and nearest Thai Embassy. The visa requirements are on their website. Are those requirements not correct? I am not sure how the Australian embassy could help me ? I was at the Australian embassy in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago, but they had no advice on travel to Thailand.
I don’t understand why the Longstay Company is setting requirements if the visa has not yet been approved – shouldn’t it have been approved before they asked me to send my information?
Surely home owners should be given preference over “so called” Chinese tourists who, according to the Bangkok Post, are only coming for 30 days (with 14 days quarantine, and again on their return home) – I thought the STV was for 90 days + two extensions…something doesn’t seem right.
I understand that you are only trying to keep people updated, however, there needs to be some kind of clear plan for those wishing to return. Who is taking responsibility for our properties, worldly goods etc….it’s quite daunting, depressing, and so very frustrating. Thank you always for your help.

    • October 27, 2020

      Dear Christine,
      Good day.
The reason I mentioned Australia is that there is no hope in Japan. It seems like the Thai Embassy there does not care or they do not respond.
So why wait in Japan if you can be in Australia, your home country and apply for the STV or Non Immigrant OA visa from Sydney or Canberra and fly to Thailand?
I hope you can consider that option.
      Thank you.

      Good morning Rex,
Thank you for always answering my questions. I am sure you are quite fed up with me by now. I do understand your advice, however, unfortunately, I can’t go to Australia, without first going to Bangkok!! Everything I need for Australia, is in Bangkok! Then, even if I could get to Australia, I have no place to stay there! I have not lived in Australia for over 30 years, and as I always fly Thai, via Bangkok, when I visit Melbourne, all my important cards, papers, money etc, I keep in my apartment there. My trip back to Japan, was for three weeks, so I bought nothing with me! So, I am stuck!!
I do apologize for always asking difficult questions, but you are the only person who is even interested in the situation so many people face right now. I truly appreciate your advice, and I have tried everything you have suggested until now. I will write yet another email to the Thai Embassy in Tokyo, in the hope that they will (one day) respond. Your help and kindness is much appreciated by me and many others, I am sure. Thank you and have a good day.

      Dear Rex,

Good morning, and thank you once again for never forgetting me and my efforts to return to Thailand. The websites you have listed, are those that I have also been working from. However, there are several problems which I needed answers for – and, as I think I mentioned, received no satisfaction ,when I eventually spoke to a human at the Embassy in Tokyo.

I list below the problems I was unable to solve, basically due to the total refusal of the Embassy staff member to listen, or show any interest in my questions, she also did not offer an alternative time to call, to have a telephone consultation as offered on their recording.

I chose the apply for Non-Immigrant Visa (long stay 1 year) – for two reasons.

It would be the most practical visa to transfer to a Retirement Visa at later date.
It doesn’t request any quarantine time (although, that could just be an error).

On the Application form there are several problems I needed answered.

No 5: The air ticket must be purchased prior to submitting the documents, but as you can see on the list – maximum time to submit documents is about 15 days before the flight. However, I must give a month’s notice on my apartment, which would leave me homeless, with about 80 + kilo of luggage if my visa were declined. Also, all applicants are required to sign that they will not request a refund if the visa is rejected!

No. 6 As I have not been working since March (when I expected to move to Thailand) of course my financial statement in Japan in the past three months, would be zero….certainly wouldn’t be acceptable !
      Re: a / b / c
a – is the best for me, as I have had the money in my SCB account since beginning of February. However SCB said they could not issue an original bank statement unless I came in person – clearly impossible.

I also have well over the required amount in my Australian bank account, however, again the Embassy said this could not be sent by email – must be a certified copy with bank stamp – but (unless that has changed this week), all airmail post has been suspended between Australia and Japan. My sister has power of attorney, she could organize in my absence, but again – Embassy will not accept an emailed copy.
I could even print out a current statement online – but, that would not have the official bank seal as the Embassy staff said was required.
And – if all the above could happen, how could it be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan???

No. 8 Medical Certificate for weird, almost obsolete diseases required – ok, I assume I could request that at a hospital – but not sure how to get it certified by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, if it must be presented to Embassy in a sealed envelope…wouldn’t it need to be opened to certify it?

No.10 My Insurance Company in the UK, would be more than happy to complete the required certificate. However, again, it would normally be scanned and sent, which according to the Embassy staff member, would not be acceptable…as it is not an original copy ?!?!

My lawyer in Bangkok has scanned and sent me a copy of my condo Title /Deed, although not yet requested. However, that too, would not be considered an original copy according to the Embassy !

I wanted to clear up all the above questions, so that if and when I got my appointment with the Embassy, there would be no problem with incorrect, or missing documents. However this seems to be almost impossible with the current application written as it now stands…

Do you have any further advice? I am totally exhausted by the entire process. As an Australian who has never before needed a visa for Thailand, and not given any warning that the borders would be closed during the three weeks I was away. It seems Thailand is making it extraordinarily difficult to return to my home.

Once again, I do apologize for yet another long message. However, you are the only person who seems to bother helping – thank you very much. Please have a good day.

When changing from retirement visa into a marriage, that will depend of some factors such as the location where the retirement visa was issued and where do you live with your wife. If your retirement visa was issued in Bangkok and living in Bangkok also, please let me know. It will also depend if your retirement visa is category O or category OA.

    • October 27, 2020

      Dear Itzhak,
      Good day.
It was actually me who answered your question there. To change the visa from retirement into a marriage visa, you only need to change the “reason for extension” in the TM7 form. Instead of “retirement”, you can state “Thai wife”. Also, I see that your visa was issued in Chonburi and you are moving and renew it as marriage visa in Nonthaburi, is that correct? That would be more complicated since Nonthaburi might not change the visa without starting from Non O visa (which is issued by a Thai embassy abroad).
      Thank you.

I entered Thailand about 14 days ago on a work visa and will complete my quarantine in a few days. I have to fly ot the U.S.A. for a personal issue soon. Do I have to quarantine again upon my return to Thailand?

    • October 9, 2020

      Dear Dawn,
      Good day.
Yes, when you return to Thailand, perhaps within this year, you will have to do the whole process of getting a COE, booking a repatriation flight, booking an ASQ hotel, having the same COVID-19 insurance and undergo a mandatory quarantine. Please make sure sure that you have a re-entry permit before you leave Thailand so that your visa is still valid for your return.
      Thank you.

I have a question. I am Italian and have an Italian Passport and need to travel to Thailand to see my Thai family (wife and children). Every where I see that the visa exemption program for Italian passport holders was suspended until 30 September 2020 but there is no information if this has now been reinstated or not starting 1 October 2020. Will I need to apply for a visa before travel or is the visa exemption program allow me to enter Thailand without prior application for visa? Thank you

    • November 20, 2020

      Dear Marco,
      Good day.
The visa exemption has been suspended. You may enter Thailand under the 90-day non immigrant O visa for visiting your Thai family. You may apply for this visa and the certificate of entry.

Thailand does not impose any restrictions to Thai nationals going abroad. However, if a Thai leaves Thailand, it will be difficult to return. It is expensive as well.

Any information you can give would be much appreciated. Thank you!

    • September 30, 2020

      Dear Kirk,
Good day. I believe that Canada is a low risk country therefore it is possible for him to apply for the special tourist visa or STV. He has two options:
      1. He can contact the TAT office in Canada at +1 647 329 1000 or [email protected]
      2. He can check this for an accredited agency who can assist you STV application:https://www.thaiembassy.com/travel/thailand-special-tourist-visa.php

    Dear Rex,

Thank you for the new information regarding the Non-Immigrant OA visa. However, as I live in Japan, I am not sure how the visa being available in Switzerland could help me?
The Thai Embassy in Tokyo is unfortunately, still not answering their phones, and the only email response I received, was to call the number that is the recording.
I am currently looking at the STV, although it is certainly not the perfect solution.
It would be wonderful if the current situation improved, and not quite so expensive for those of us who are not able to claim expenses from a company.
Thank you for always keeping me updated – much appreciated.

Hello, and thank you for all the information your site provides. Fantastic resource! I would love to receive your advice regarding my situation. I’m a US citizen, 76, here in Lamphun under the visa amnesty (my original visa was tourist visa, extended). Today (22 Sep 2020), I got an “extension of stay is under consideration” stamp at the Lamphun immigration office, with instructions to return on 12 Oct 2020. Cost, 1,900 baht. I was expecting to receive a 30 extension of stay, and I don’t know what is going to happen on 12 Oct when I return to immigration. That is one concern. But more important is this: I want to apply for a retirement visa. I would like to get the process started as soon as possible, but I’m confused by the “under consideration” designation, and I don’t know what to do or when to do it. My questions: Can I apply for the retirement visa now (i.e., before 12 Oct)? Or do I have to wait until 12 Oct? Or is there something else I should do? Any advice would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • September 22, 2020

      Dear Hugh,
      Good day.
The under consideration stamp is a partial issuance of your 30 days extension. It means, the remainder of your extension will be given on October 12. The new stamp will be October 25 or 26.
That is actually problematic because you may not be able to apply for the change of visa since you need to have more than 15 days in your stamp. So if the immigration office partially gave it to you, then you might have a chance to do the change of visa. I think the best thing to do is to visit them and ask them if you can apply for the Non O visa right now while being “under consideration” based on having 800,000 THB in your bank account.
      Thank you.

    • September 24, 2020

You’re welcome. Have a good day.

    • September 23, 2020

Another question: I’m really curious why they do a partial issuance of the 30 day extension instead of just issuing the full 30 days. What is the logic behind it? I mean, if they’re going to issue the full 30 days in the end anyway, what is the point of breaking it up? It seems like it does nothing but create extra work for immigration and an added inconvenience for the applicant (who has to make extra visit to the immigration office), which doesn’t make sense.

    • September 25, 2020

      Dear Hugh,
      good day.
Because they need time to verify the authenticity of the embassy letter that was submitted? That is my opinion. I am sure if you call 1178, someone from the immigration office can explain it.
      Thank you.

      Dear James,
I believe that your extension will solely based on the embassy letter, without a printed copt of this letter, you may not be able to get the extension. I recommend that you contact the local immigration office in your province to check if they are able to give you the “under consideration” stamp and you can present the letter when you pick up the remaining of the 30 days extension.
I hope they will be lenient regarding this matter.

Do I need this covid-19 cover for my extension or my non o visa renewal?

      Dear Jim,
The COVID-19 travel insurance is only required for those who are entering Thailand. Perhaps you have heard of the health insurance being required for those who are under Non Immigrant OA visa. So for your case, you have under a non immigrant O visa, therefore you do not need to show any health insurance.

The flights that are allowed from UK to Thailand is only with Thai Airways. So you need to get in touch with the Thai Embassy in London regarding this matter.
If you are coming on a Thai passport, you may sign up for the free state quarantine or the paid hotel quarantine. Yes, you need the PCR COVID 19 test result no issued not more than 72 hours before the flight.

      Hello Rex,
Maybe you remember me from my earlier enquires. As you suggested, I wrote and sent all the requested details to the Thai LongstayCompany and received the following response on September 29….
      Dear Christine,

No problem, once we are able to start processing your visa, we will contact you immediately.

We are still waiting for the approval of government regulation.

      Yours Sincerely,

      Armaj Sombunjaroen

However, it is now almost the end of October and I have heard nothing more! I wrote again last week and asked what the current situation was – but no response. Do you know what is happening? Is that company real? Or just a scam? I read that Chinese people are being admitted to Thailand with the STV already. How can that be possible if according to the Longstay Company, they are still waiting for government approval?
I am becoming more and more depressed by the continuing uncertainty, and spending thousands of dollars just waiting here in Tokyo. The Embassy in Tokyo is still not answering their phones, and I am beginning to worry that I will die of old age, before Thailand opens its borders to home owners. Please advise if you have any new information on visa options for people like me. Thank you, always for your help and advice.

      Dear Ryan,
      You have 3 options:
      1. You may leave Thailand on or before September 26.
      2. You may apply for 30-day extension if you are unable to travel due to illness or cancelled flights. You may apply for it before September 26. You will need an embassy letter to get the extension.
      3. If you have a change of circumstance such as employment, enroll in a university, married to a Thai or retirement, you may contact your local immigration office for the change of visa if you are still qualified to change the visa. The processing time for changing of visa category takes 15 days.
      Thank you.

    • September 16, 2020

      Dear Igor,
      Good day.
There has been no specific list announced by the government since the proposal was only approved yesterday. It could be countries like China, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. But we recommend to wait for new announcements from the government.
      Thank you.

According to an interview with the TAT head, this visa is available to the countries in the Top 10 of the Global COVID-19 Index or ones who haven’t had new cases for say 28 days will be allowed.

    • September 22, 2020

      Dear Jordan,
Yes, you need to cancel the visa and the work permit. When you cancel the visa, you can file for a short term extension. You can apply for 30 days extension using the embassy letter. As for the change of the visa, it might not be possible to do the change of visa inside the country so you it is best for you to check with your new employer to know where will get your new visa.
      Thank you.

    • September 22, 2020

      Dear Jordan,
For teachers, some immigration offices are more lenient in issuing a new non B visa. If the old employer and the new employer are on the same province, you may be able to cancel the old and visa and apply for the new visa simultaneously. I recommend for you to work closely with the new employer and ask them for their advice.
      Thank you.

What happens after the September 26th deadline ? Do I have to leave the country ? .. Will there be further extensions ? Will they open the land borders.? Grateful for your advice .

    • September 15, 2020

      Dear Gary,
      Good day.
If you have the non-immigrant O visa that requires you to leave every 90 days, we recommend that you convert this type of visa into a marriage visa or into a retirement visa. Just make sure that you have 400,000 THB or you have 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account. You may apply for this visa at Thai embassy in Chiang Mai. If for financial reason, you do not qualify for these visas, you may still extend your stay for 60 days, you need to submit the application before September 26.
      Thank you.

    Hi,
I have a spouse visa good until March 2020, but can’t get a stamp. I already got an extension (which I shouldn’t need) because airports are locked. It has been slow to get documents ready during the lockdown. Now I have managed to get an alien ID, get on house book with my wifes home. I needed that before I could find a bank that would let me get an account – now I’m able, just now to get money into a Thai Bank but … this Sept 26 deadline. Is it possible to simply get a stamp giving me the 90 days per entry so I can let the money be in my bank long enough to extend to a 1 year married visa extension. That was the purpose of my last trip home where I got my first spouse 1 year multi-entry visa.

It seems pointless to fly out when I have the visa I need and it isn’t expired – just needs a check in with immigration. It seems only airports can provide that stamp. Do I really need to get an embassy letter to explain I’m just trying to complete my visa extension and stay with my wife?

    • September 15, 2020

      Dear Michael,
You may request for a short term 60-day extension for having Thai wife. This should give you time for the funds to season for 2 months in order to get a marriage visa for 1 year. You do not need an embassy letter for this 60-day extension.
      Thank you.

I already used my 60 day extension … trying to do the right thing. IO said “yes, this is the right thing to do” but I’m not yet ready getting bank and transfers into it happening. So I guess I need another visa that I am allowed.

    • September 15, 2020

      Dear Pim,
Good day. Unfortunately, it is not possible to renew the work permit because you will need to provide the visa stamp as part of the requirement. So if you are not in Thailand, there is no entry stamp. If the work permit expires while you are away, you can get a new visa from the Thai embassy and ask for WP3 from your employer to be able to get a visa and COE to return to Thailand. If there is Thai Embassy in your country, for sure there is a repatriation flights for Thai nationals, in which case, you are able to join as well.

The district offices in Bangkok would allow you to get married as long as your marriage affirmation and certified copy of passport has been translated and legalised by Thai MFA and you bring the copy of the official document/announcement from the government regarding visa amnesty in Thai language also.

I was waiting to ask for a NON-B/O visa at Thai embassy outside Thailand but since the borders may not be open before, I wonder what is the right thing to do now.
    – Will the immigration will allow me to make a new visa with the proof of future employment so that I can apply for a work permit in the coming 3 months?
    – Or should I start with the work permit before to apply for the right visa?
Thank you very much for your advices

Last August 11, there has been a request submitted to the Immigration Head Office asking to allow applicants to change from tourist visa/visa amnesty to Non immigrant B visa inside Thailand. However the immigration has not responded to this request just yet. I would recommend that you ask your new employer to check with the local immigration if they will consider your application. It is a case-to-case basis so you might have shot. If this is not possible, then you can do the 1 month extension or 2 months extension for now if you are unable to travel.

Following your good news, I have one more question which I hope you won’t mind answering. If, and when, it is possible for condo owners to enter Thailand, do you think the government/Immigration or whomever, will want proof of ownership? The original of my Title is currently with the Thai lawyers who helped with the purchase, and are preparing to help with my retirement visa. Do you think it would be advisable, to ask them to email me a copy of the Title should I need it to enter? Of course I realize it could be months away, but I would like to be prepared well in advance, if possible. I do have a business card showing details of my address, however, that doesn’t prove ownership in anyway.
I understand you are busy, and my question is certainly not urgent as this time, however, I would be grateful for advice at your convenience.
Thank you once again, and have a good weekend.

    Hi Rex,
I bit the bullet so to speak and converted my multi entry non immigrant “O”. visa over to retirement visa. I’m happy that I now don’t have to worry about flying in and out to keep the visa validated. However, I was very surprised that the visa was made effective from May 24th (90 days from my last stamp), and not from 27th Sept as we are all on a visa amnesty. That completely puzzled me. I thus lost ~3 months resulting in a 9 month visa not a 12 month visa.
Others may benefit from this info, and thus can be aware that the immigration starts your retirement visa from your last stamp when converting over from a non immigrant “O” visa, and does not take the visa amnesty into consideration.
Many thanks for your tips and advise in getting sorted.

Or will we be able to enter on same VISA once Thailand is opened. I have a home in Phitsanulok. Thank you!

At this time, there is no new announcement from the government and the CAAT. The current list is the same as the one on August 3rd.
      Thank you.

Hello, I am south korean currently holding student visa in bangkok but my visa finishes on 26th sep and i am graduating before that, can i change to tourist visa without going out of thailand? With letter from embassy how long can i stay? If its for 30days can i get the letter from embassy every 30days and report every 30days is it possible or do immigration have limits for this conditions?
    Thank you

    • August 28, 2020

      Dear Kasia,
The tourist visa is not issued in Thailand. It is issued by Thai embassy outside Thailand. You have 3 options:
      1. You may leave Thailand on or before September 26.
      2. You may apply for 30-day extension if you are unable to travel due to illness or cancelled flights. You may apply for it before September 26.
      3. If you have a change of circumstance such as employment or married to a Thai, you may contact your local immigration office for the change of visa if you are qualified.
      Thank you.

    • August 24, 2020

      Dear Richard,
At the moment we really cannot tell nor we have the certain date it will be allowed. All we can do for now is to patiently wait for the government to include the retirees or retirement visa holders to the list of qualified foreigners to enter Thailand. This might be announced in the beginning of September or October.
      Thank you.

    Hi,

I m from Malaysia and currently under employment in Thailand.

My passport is expiring and I can’t return to Malaysia to renew my passport. Malaysia embassy here does not issue passport.

    What can I do?

    Thanks.

    • August 24, 2020

      Dear Naz,
If the Malaysia Embassy in Bangkok cannot issue a new passport, perhaps they can issue an emergency passport in order to stay longer in Thailand. I assume your visa will also expire soon. If both will expire soon and you cannot get a new passport or emergency passport, then you must leave Thailand. You cannot stay in Thailand with an expired visa and passport.
      Thank you.

    Dear Rex,

I am an Indonesian nationality with Non-imm (ED) visa (long-term) and will be expire on 31st August 2020. Flight back to Indonesia actually scheduled on 27th August, but, due to I have something to do in the University, to complete all my graduation thing, I might be able to leaving Thailand on 10th or 17th September (repartiation flight is only scheduled every thursday). Based on my case, do I need to extend my Visa using embassy letter? or, I just can leaving Thailand on that date without doing nothing? If I just can leave, do I got any penalty?
Note that my Visa is expire on 31st August and I planned to leaving Thailand on 17th September.

    Thankyou in advance

    • August 24, 2020

      Dear Egrax,
If you are flying out on September 10 or 17, you do not need to get embassy letter for extension. You are covered by the visa amnesty.
      Thank you.

    Dear Rex,

I am very disappointed, as there has been no response to my questions to you sent on August 14 in the afternoon. I have checked daily, however, now I see responses to comments from August 19 – but mine has been ignored? I know it was received because I saw it online saying it was waiting for moderation (or similar) – then it disappeared Why? that is the second time that has happened to me, and I don’t understand. My questions are valid, and I have been waiting for 5 months. The information on this website regularly tells us to contact our local Thai Embassy for further information, however how does one do that if they don’t respond, to calls or emails? Why are my questions less important than those to whom you respond. You are the only official website for frustrated people trying to return to their homes..please help!

      Dear Christine,
Thank you for your message. This website is managed by Siam Legal International, which is a private firm, it is not an official website of any Thai Embassy. At this time, we really cannot tell you any option for entering Thailand. Yes, we are just echoing the advice by the Thai Immigration and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, that both Thai nationals and foreigners who wish to return to Thailand MUST contact the Thai Embassy in their location. If the Thai Embassy in Tokyo does not answer your calls, we would have no idea how to make them answer the call. Perhaps another option for you is to contact the British Embassy in Bangkok https://www.facebook.com/ukinthailand/ and ask the British Embassy Bangkok to make a complaint before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bangkok about the current situation at Thai Embassy in Tokyo not answering the calls or not being helpful.
      Thank you.

      Rex,

So sorry, I had assumed your website, although updated by your company, was organized by the Thai embassies worldwide. I do apologize. I am not sure that the British Embassy would be helpful to me as I am Australian. There is an Australian Embassy here though, so perhaps I can contact them. My trip from Bangkok to Australia next week – has also been cancelled due to the fact that I can’t get to Bangkok to get my personal papers needed for Australia. It’s a very sad state of affairs indeed. It’s all very stressful with so much uncertainty. I thank you for your comments, and know there are many people like me who only remain sane due to the information posted on your website. Much appreciated-thank you.

    • August 19, 2020

      Dear Christine,
The social media of Australian Embassy Bangkok is here: https://www.facebook.com/australiainthailand/ maybe they can help you connect to an officer from Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs who may be able to check Thai Embassy in Tokyo why they are not responsive during this time.
      Thank you.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I will try !! I will never give up, and want to get to Bangkok as soon as possible…

I believe there are many people who are grateful that your website exists. Let’s just hope the government wakes up soon and realizes just how many Thai people are suffering because of the lockdown. The rich can wait…but the poor, many of whom rely on foreigners for business, can’t wait forever. I feel sad for my friends, and others who cannot live on air. Your help is much appreciated, I will continue to hope for some positive changes in the near future. Thank you!!

      Dear Christine,
Good day. It seems like there is good news for you today. According to Channel 7, the CCSA are next considering to allow two more groups of foreigners into the country: those who have long stay visas (retirees) and others who own houses/condos. let’s wait for further announcement.
      Thank you.

I am Indonesian living in Narathiwat now, I am here with a tourist extended visa. I just realized that the amnesty visa started from 26 March 2020. And my visa was valid until 25 march. So my question is whether my visa extended automatically or I was overstaying one day?

I also have a plan to go back to Indonesia on the first of September But before that I should have PCR test certificate or something like that, is BKK airport provide the test so I can directly do the test there.

    Thanks

    • August 19, 2020

      Dear Tri,
You must contact your local immigration office for the solution. They might impose an overstay for only 1 day (500 THB) or they may impose an overstay for 20,000 THB.
      Thank you.

    Dear Rex,
Sometime ago (end June perhaps), I wrote to you regarding my situation, and desire to return to my home in Bangkok. You suggested that I contact the Embassy here in Tokyo, because, as a permanent resident of Japan, I may be able to apply for a Non-Immigrant visa from here. Well, since then, I have called almost everyday – and waited patiently for the recording to finish – in the hope that I would then be put though to a consultant…but until now, nobody has ever answered the phone.
I have also followed their advice to go to the website – where it offers me a contact by email. I have sent three emails, however, none has been answered. So, although all details on the recording remain, it’s impossible to follow up-why this is still the case, after so long? Do you know if the Embassy is open or closed?
I still follow your Covid-19 website, and regularly check the changes to those who can enter Thailand. However, “property owners” are not listed as either those who can enter, or those who can’t enter at this time – how do I move forward, with no status at all, and no apparent rights for property owners?
I don’t wish to jump the queue, I just want to know how to get into the queue – with no possibility to get information from the Embassy in Tokyo (surely quite an important location?).
After over five months of waiting, I am so very worried about my condo – no windows open, air conditioners not on timer, and it is the hot, wet season (could be up to 70 degrees inside)….the heat and humidity will certainly destroy my furniture, and clothes, as I only prepared to be away for three weeks.
Is there not be some system for people like me? Surely I am not the only one? I’d be happy to self-isolate, wear a tracker bracelet etc. I have no desire to run around visiting tourist sights, or to spend time in some place like Phuket (which is being considered according to the Bangkok Post) – I just want to have some kind of certainty about when I can return to my home in Bangkok. Every month I must ask for special privileges here in Tokyo, as I had already quit my job, canceled my credit card, apartment lease, and all services. I transferred my insurance, and discarded most of my belongings. It’s expensive, and such a waste of time and money, when I could be taking care of my home in Bangkok, and spending my money in Thailand. Do you believe there will be some kind of plan for property owners in the near future? I would really appreciate your help as it seems there is nobody I can consult here. Thank you in advance for your help. Christine

      Dear Christine,
      Good day!
Unfortunately there has been no changes or no new additions to the list of foreigners allowed to enter Thailand. What was posted on August 3rd is still the same. However, there has been news that Phuket and Chiang Mai may offer special entry to long term travelers but no information has been finalised.
Also, right now, the non immigrant O visa holders that are allowed are only the immediate family of Thai nationals or foreigners with Thai work permit or parents of foreign students. The Non-immigrant O visa for retirees and condo owners are not listed just yet. Perhaps in September, you will be the next in line. Sorry for the delayed reply, it has been a busy week for us.
      Thank you.

      August 19, 2020

      Rex,

Thank you so much for your reply. Unfortunately, my problem is that although I own a condo in Bangkok, I have no Non-immigrant O visa as my Bangkok lawyer was preparing that for April 2020. I haven’t been able to return and complete the visa – even though all my money, title etc etc, is already in Bangkok assuming I was going to be there too at the end of March…

    • August 21, 2020

      Dear Christine,
We understand your dilemma and regret to inform you that at this time, we are also powerless. We are just waiting for new updates from the government. Right now the news states that emergency decree will be extended which means, the travel ban may be extended also. We are hoping and praying that new groups would include Non O under retirement or proposed retirement. But the second problem you may face is the Thai Embassy in Tokyo.
      Thank you.

Hi, I’m enquiring on behalf of my Chinese wife travelling from mainland China to Australia and transiting in Thailand. My questions are:
    1. Will she be allowed to transit at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to catch her connecting flight to Queensland, Australia?
    2. Does she require a Transit Visa?
    3. Does she require a COVID-19 health certificate and health insurance?
    4. Any other travel requirements that you know of, if applicable?

    Thanks

    • August 14, 2020

      Dear RP,
If the flight is operated by Thai Airways, yes, she can transit through Thailand. Transit visa will not be required if she does not need to disembark. Health certificate with negative result of COVID-19 is required to take the flight. For more information, it is best to call the airline.
      Thank you.

      Thanks for your prompt reply.

Both flights are operated by Thai Airways Intl. After the arrival of the 1st flight, there is a 6 hour stopover at Suvarnabhumi Intl Airport before the 2nd flight to Australia (on a different plane and same terminal too I assume) and so she obviously would be disembarking from the plane. Given this, does she still require a Transit Visa? Health/travel insurance?

      Thanks

    • August 14, 2020

We recommend for you to contact the airline. The medical test would be required for sure. I am not sure of the visa and insurance.

      Hi,
I phoned Thai Airways in Thailand and they could not answer any questions about transiting at the airport and if a transit visa or health insurance was required. They told me to phone the Thai Embassy. Both my wife and I have tried phoning Thai Embassy in Beijing and Guangzhou and were immediately cut off after phoning. Given this, how can we find out this information?

      Thanks

    • August 19, 2020

      Dear RP,
The airline should know these things. The embassy may not have the updated information. The airline usually applies for permit to land in Bangkok airport therefore, they should know what are the requirements they need to implement in order get the permit.
      Thank you.

      August 20, 2020

      Hi Rex,
Thanks again for your assistance. I did phone Thai Airways at another time a few days ago and spoke to a very helpful employee who advised me that a Chinese passport holder is allowed to transit through Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to catch a connecting flight to a 3rd destination as long as the passenger’s transit time was not greater than 12 hours. They also confirmed that a Transit Visa was not required in this instance. They were not able to advise me about travel insurance or if a COVID-19 health certificate was required. However, they said I would have to check these details with the departing country’s government (i.e. China) and the final destination country’s government (Aust.) to confirm what their policies are.

      Thanks

    • August 20, 2020

      Dear RP,
That is good to know. I think that PCR test may be required by your destination country so it is safe to get get one before your flight.

    Hello Rex,

Thank you for your time answering all these comments. I’m currently in Thailand on a Non-O visa and my visa will expire in December. However, normally with my visa I need to leave the country every 90 days. Since this has been protected under amnesty so far, do you know what I need to do before sept. 26? Will I be forced to leave the country and not be able to get in or can I apply to not have to leave the country due to covid as my visa is valid until december? Thank you for your help!

    • August 14, 2020

      Dear Hannah,
      Good day.
So you have a 1 year visa issued from a Thai Embassy and it is valid until December 2020. However, with this visa, you are only allowed to stay for 90 days. Your 90-day entry stamp has already expired and you are now availing the amnesty or grace period. May I ask what was the basis of your Non O visa? If this is based on Thai spouse, you can go to the immigration office and request for 1 year extension. If you are above 50 years old, you can also ask for the 1 year extension at your local immigration office. If this is under volunteer work, please ask your organisation if they can extend this permit to stay to 1 year at your local immigration office. If none of these 3 options is applicable to you, you have no choice but to leave Thailand on or before September 26. We are unsure yet if you are qualified to re-enter Thailand, since I have no idea what was the basis of your Non O visa.
      Thank you.

    • Hannah
      August 14, 2020

Hi Rex, the basis is of volunteering here in thailand. So, are you saying I can get a letter from my organization to bring to thai immigration? Thank you!

    • August 14, 2020

Yes, you may try that. The organisation should accompany you to apply for the 1 year extension of stay.

    Hi,
I am enquiring about whether a Chinese citizen travelling from mainland China (e.g. from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou) is allowed to transit through Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport to catch a connecting flight to Australia? On this page in response to a question from a person travelling from Laos to Europe and transiting through Thailand it was written “According to Thai Airways, yes, incoming passengers including transiting passengers are required to present a COVID-19 health certificate and health insurance.” Is this still applicable and would a Chinese citizen require a transit visa if allowed to transit in Bangkok? Also, is this the best website to use for the most uptodate information about Thailand travel restrictions?
