Travel to Thailand for unvaccinated travelers is easier than ever.

Countries acted quickly to curb the spread of Covid-19. Vaccines were developed and rolled out to local populations. Debate continues about whether vaccines are good or bad. Sometimes these debates are heated. Everyone has an opinion, and that is exactly what they are… opinions.

In the end, country authorities have to follow their health policies. As borders reopen and people look to travel again, countries need to find the best way to protect their locals and their visitors. No matter their vaccination status, if people want to visit somewhere abroad, they have to follow the rules set by the country.

Thailand has always been a popular holiday destination, with its beautiful beaches, islands, exotic food, wildlife, and culture. It has also been strict with allowing travelers back into the country, especially unvaccinated travelers. They set their rules and visitors follow them.

So how does an unvaccinated traveler get here?

June 1st will see a huge leap forward in helping unvaccinated travelers visit Thailand again. There are two major changes that will ease entry for unvaccinated travelers.

  • All mandatory quarantines have been removed. Unvaccinated travelers do not need to book SHA+ hotel packages anymore.
  • Unvaccinated travelers will now have the choice of completing an RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before arriving in Thailand.

All foreign travelers will still need to provide health documents and apply for a Thailand Pass, so below is how you, an unvaccinated traveler, can easily enter Thailand after June 1.

Will people need Thailand Pass after June 1?

Yes. Whether unvaccinated or vaccinated, all foreigners will need an approved Thailand Pass to enter the country.

The good news is that once you upload your required documents and press submit, your Thailand Pass will be approved instantly and you will receive your QR code by email.

Documents required for unvaccinated travelers

Before we look at how you apply, it is good to know what you need to apply. If you have these documents prepared, your Thailand Pass application will be completed and approved in minutes.

Unvaccinated travelers will need the following documents when applying for a Thailand Pass:

  • Passport profile page
  • Valid travel insurance policy with COVID cover
  • RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test results no older than 72 hours before the departure date

Thailand Pass does not accept PDF files, so it is best to take a high-quality photo of these documents and upload the files as JPEGs.

Applying for Thailand Pass when Unvaccinated

Organize your Travel insurance

Foreigners entering Thailand need a valid Travel Insurance policy. This policy must be uploaded into the Thailand Pass system. The insurance policy must:

  • Have a minimum medical coverage of  $10,000 USD
  • Cover “Covid -19” related incidents
  • Remain valid for the entire duration of your stay in Thailand

Any policy that meets these requirements will be accepted, but if you are after fast service, competitive pricing, and convenience, have a look at AXA Sawasdee Thailand.

AXA Sawasdee Thailand is known and respected by Thai Authorities. They offer instant cover, no hidden waiting periods, and a convenient 1-Page Certificate of Insurance. This certificate contains all your information which means there is no need to upload multiple pages into Thailand Pass.

COVID Travel Insurance Thailand

Complete your pre-departure COVID test

Unvaccinated travelers need to complete and upload a negative COVID test result into their Thailand Pass application.

The result must be no more than 72 hours old before your departure date.

From June 1st, unvaccinated travelers will be able to complete a Pro-ATK test instead of an RT-PCR test. A Pro-ATK test is not a home self-test. It must be completed by a medical professional. The advantages of Pro-ATK tests are that they are generally cheaper than RT-PCR tests and you will receive a result within minutes instead of having to wait hours or days.

No matter what test you choose, you need to have it completed before registering for a Thailand Pass.

Prepare your children for Thailand Pass

If you are unvaccinated and traveling with children, it is good to know what your children need for entry:

  • Children under the age of 18 do not need to be vaccinated.
  • Children under 18 do not complete a separate Thailand Pass application but are added to a parent’s application.
  • Children must be insured while in Thailand. A child can have a separate insurance policy or be included in a family policy. If you choose to organize a family policy, make sure that all children are clearly stated in the paperwork.
  • A child enters Thailand the same way as their parents. Because unvaccinated travelers will need to complete a pre-departure COVID test, a child will also need to complete a test. All results are uploaded into the Thailand Pass system.

Register for your Thailand Pass

Now that you have all your documents ready, it’s time to apply for Thailand Pass. Remember that any person over 18 must complete a separate application and receive their own QR code.

You need to apply at this link – https://tp.consular.go.th/

There are currently scam sites mimicking Thailand Pass, so only use the link above. Thailand Pass is a FREE process. If a site ever asks you to enter payment details, it is a SCAM. Leave the site immediately.

Choose whether you will enter Thailand by Air or Land.

The online registration system is only available for Air or Land entry. People looking to enter by sea need to follow a different process. You need to contact your local Thai Embassy or Consulate to gain approval.

Enter your personal details; including arrival date, flight number, departure country, and where you will stay on arrival.

Important things to note in this section:

  • The flight number is the flight you will enter Thailand with. If you have not booked flights yet, enter the flight you are considering booking.
  • Your departure country is the original point of departure, not a transit country.
  • Travelers do not need to show proof of accommodation, but the system requires an address. The address can be a hotel, home, or friend’s address. If you have not booked accommodation, you can enter the address of where you are thinking of staying. Visitors only need to enter an address for the first night, not their entire visit. If you do not enter an address, the application cannot be submitted.
  • Mandatory quarantine has been removed, so you do not need to book a SHA+ hotel. Unvaccinated travelers are welcome to stay anywhere or travel anywhere once they arrive in Thailand. If you would like to see the best accommodation available and book with little worry, check out Agoda.

Add additional applicant details.

Enter your insurance details and upload your 1-Page insurance certificate or policy.

Complete the RT-PCR/Pro-ATK result section and upload your test results.

Submit your application.

Thailand Pass Approval

After submitting your application, check your email. You will find confirmation that your Thailand Pass is being processed. If you cannot find the email, check your junk/spam folder.

After June 1st, approvals are immediate. You should find an email with a confirmation of approval. The email will contain a QR code. This is what you will need to show Immigration Officers when arriving in Thailand.

Best Practice for Entering Thailand

When arriving in Thailand, you will need to show Immigration Officers certain documents. These are the same documents you used for your Thailand Pass application.

You can show digital copies, but things can go wrong with technology. Previous travelers recommend you print a hard copy of all your documents.

You should print:

  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • Insurance certificate
  • COVID test results

Your time through Passport Control will be quicker and Immigration Officers will appreciate the effort to help them check your information.

FAQ for Unvaccinated Travelers

When will the new changes take effect?

All new Thailand Pass changes will be implemented from June 1, 2022.

Can I start my application before getting my COVID test and then complete it once I have the result?

No. The Thailand Pass system does not save details before submission so you must have everything ready before starting your application.

Where can I complete a Pro-ATK test?

This will depend on your country. It is best to do an online search for “Pro-ATK test clinics” in your country.

Do I need to apply for a new Thailand Pass if my arrival date changes?

Your Pass is valid for a period of 7 days before or after your original arrival date. If your flight changes within this date range, you do not need to reapply. If your arrival changes by more than 7 days, then you will need to apply for a new Thailand Pass.

Do I need to reapply if my flight number changes?

No. You do not need to apply for a new Pass if your arrival flight changes.

Do I need to reapply for Thailand Pass if my hotel address changes?

You do not need to reapply if you choose to change accommodation because you do not need to show proof of accommodation.

If I leave Thailand for another country and then enter again, can I use the same Thailand Pass?

Each Thailand Pass is valid for 1 entry into the country. If you intend to leave and return, you will need to apply for a new Thailand Pass. As an unvaccinated traveler, this means you would need to complete another Pro-ATK or RT-PCR test for approval.

We are travelling to Thailand with our 16 year old son and his unvaccinated 16 year old girlfriend. The rest our group is vaccinated. Will she need to do a PCR 72 hours prior to departure, or will a letter from her parents stating that we are her guardian for the duration of the holiday suffice?
    Kind regards, Kaya

I would like to enquire about TM6 form . The website mentions that TM6 form is officially canceled but if you have a plan to extend visa , you might still need and should ask at immigration.

Since I will arrive to Bangkok with tourist visa ,is there any way to get TM6 form at airport immigration in case I have to extend or change visa ? Can I request the immigration officials from air port to stamp on my TM6 form ?

Does my unvaccinated 5 year old need a negative PCR or RAT prior to entering Thailand? Two parents and older siblings are fully vaccinated.

      Dear Elisha,

If the unvaccinated child will travel with a vaccinated parent, the test is not required.

Hi there we are vaccinated and travelling with unvaccinated children.

What is the definition of fully vaccinated parent – 2 doses for a 2 dose vaccine? Or is Thailand including boosters?

    Thanks

      Hi Reni,

If parents are fully vaccinated, the children can enter with the procedure you have. 2 doses considered fully vaccinated.

    Hi,
I’m travelling to Phuket 21/06/2022, went to Perth Airport to check all good before our flight. To my surprise they said that Pro-ATK are not accepted. They showed me a piece of paper with the latest updates that state only PCR tests are accepted.
I Only have one dose from January and Covid recovery Letter that’s under 4 weeks old.
If they deny me check in, how can I prove that Pro-ATK are accepted by Thai authorities?
I did my Pro RAT test today and received my Travel Pass.
    Thanks

      Dear Mike,

You can explain to the airline and the immigration office (if they ask) that you will extend your 30 days free visa.

If your children are traveling with you and you are fully vaccinated, all of you do not need a test. Please include your children’s names when you register your Thailand Pass.

We are travelling to Thailand as family, adults are vaccinated but children below 18 are not vaccinated. Do the children need to carry RTPCR or Pro-ATK result on their thailand pass??

    • June 17, 2022

      Dear Nidhi,

If the children are traveling with a fully vaccinated parent, the unvaccinated children are not required to have COVID test. Make sure that the children’s names are added to your Thailand Pass registration.
      Thank you.
