Times, they are a-changin’! As the world adapts to Covid, countries are opening their borders, easing travel restrictions, and reigniting tourism. It is time to welcome visitors again… safely.

Thailand has recently announced new changes to their Thailand Pass system which take effect on June 1.

When Covid hit in 2020, the world locked down. International borders closed, planes were grounded, and people insulated themselves to stem the spread of the virus. We entered a period of international isolation.

The Australian government locked down hard. For those who loved to travel, the question was not if they could get into another country, but if they could get out of their own. For over 2 years, Australia imposed a strict travel ban. At various times during the pandemic, people couldn’t leave their homes, let alone the country.

Thailand has always been a popular tourist destination for Aussies. It’s close, it’s cheap, and it’s in a different hemisphere. Australians have been leaving winter behind and enjoying the warm, tropical weather of Thailand for years.

Now that the travel ban has been lifted, Australians are getting back out into the world.

Thailand has always had a good relationship with Australia and looks forward to the patronage of their Asia-Pacific neighbors again. But Thailand understands Covid has not disappeared yet and they need to not only protect their people but those who choose to visit.

How do you ensure people can travel safely during these times? Thailand’s answer was to implement an online system called Thailand Pass.

What is Thailand Pass?

Thailand Pass is a free online registration system where people who travel to Thailand can provide some basic health information and be approved to visit the country. It confirms the vaccination status of travelers arriving in Thailand and ensures they have the necessary protection in case they are diagnosed with Covid while here.

You will be pleased to know there were big changes to the Thai Pass system from June 1st, 2022.

  • Thai Pass approvals are now instant on submission.
  • All mandatory quarantine periods have been removed.
  • Unvaccinated travelers now have the option of completing an RT-PCR test or the faster Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK).

Let’s break down how Thailand Pass works for Australians so they can hop a flight and escape winter without worrying.

Getting to Thailand

There are two ways an Aussie can register their entry to Thailand in Thailand Pass; by Air or by Land.

Air is for those who will be arriving on a flight through an international airport.

Land is for people who have already escaped Australia and seek to enter Thailand through a land border.

Vaccination Status

Thailand welcomes all travelers, no matter their vaccination status. They have eased their travel restrictions and tried to make it easy for people to visit while keeping them safe.

Your vaccination status will determine what you need to provide when applying for a Thailand Pass.

An Australian citizen will fall into one of two categories when they look at applying for their Thai Pass.

  • Vaccinated
  • Unvaccinated

The paperwork and process are a little different for each category, so have a close read to work out which works best for you.

Thailand Pass Requirements

Vaccinated:
Australians who are fully vaccinated no longer need to complete any sort of mandatory quarantine when they arrive.

They will apply for a Thailand Pass and upload the required documents for approval. Once they arrive, vaccinated Aussies are free to travel and stay anywhere in Thailand.

For Thailand Pass approval, vaccinated Australians need to provide:

  • Passport details
  • A flight itinerary
  • Travel insurance with Covid coverage
  • Vaccination certificate

Unvaccinated:
Australians who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated can complete an RT-PCR test or Professional Antigen Test before applying.

Visitors will need to complete an RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test within 72 hours of departure from their home country and before they apply for a Thailand Pass. The result needs to be uploaded to the Thailand Pass application for approval.

Australians who choose this method will be free to travel anywhere in Thailand on arrival.

The documents needed for this method of entry are:

  • Passport details
  • A flight itinerary
  • Travel insurance with Covid cover
  • A pre-departure RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test result no older than 72 hours before traveling

Insurance Requirements for Thailand Pass

Foreign travelers are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand, so it is important they protect themselves. Travel insurance was always a good idea pre-covid, but now it is mandatory because people need to be protected if they test positive for Covid while traveling.

With this in mind, the Thai government has included travel insurance with covid cover as part of their entry requirements.

If a visitor tests positive for covid in Thailand, they need to quarantine or isolate until fully recovered. The standard of insurance cover ensures Australians are protected and can cover any medical costs or treatments that accrue during their recovery. You don’t want to be out-of-pocket because of bad luck.

To have your insurance approved in Thailand Pass, it must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum cover of $10,000 USD for medical expenses and treatment.
  • It must specifically state that it covers COVID-related incidents.
  • It must remain valid for the entire length of your stay in Thailand.

If your policy meets these requirements, it will be approved. However, if you would like a policy that is flexible and designed specifically to meet the standards set by Thai authorities, check out the AXA Sawasdee Thailand policy. As a trusted insurer in Thailand, this policy is guaranteed to be approved.

Checking your Thailand Pass Status

“How do I know if my Thailand Pass has been approved?”

We get asked this a lot, so it’s worth covering.

When you hit submit on your application, you will receive an email confirmation. You should then receive your approval and Thai Pass QR code in a second email.
If you do not receive your QR code within an hour, you can check the status of your application here.

You will need your:

  • Access code
  • Passport Number
  • Email address

Thailand Pass for Children

Thailand is an eye-opening experience for Aussie kids. Kids can be a handful when traveling, so Thailand Pass tries to make their entry as simple as possible. This is how Thailand Pass works for kids.

  • Children under the age of 18 can be added to a parent’s application. They do not need a separate QR code.
  • Children under 18 will need to be covered by insurance. They can have their own policy or be included in a family policy. If you are getting a family policy, make sure all names are clearly stated.
  • Children enter the country under the same scheme as their parents. If you are vaccinated and don’t need a test, your child does not need one. If you are doing an RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test, your child will complete a test as well.

That’s it! Visiting Thailand with your children is simple if done right.

As you can see, getting to Thailand is easy if done right. Thailand Pass is a simple process when broken down.

Aussies have had to deal with a lot over the last few years; bushfires, Covid, floods, ScoMo, and elections. If anyone needs a holiday, it’s you.

Thailand is a popular travel destination for many people. It offers amazing beaches, delicious food and nightlife, as well as some of the best shopping in Asia. However, if you’re planning on visiting Thailand without a visa, there are several options! You can get an eVisa or even extend your visa by 30 days if necessary.
If you’re looking for a more flexible way to visit Thailand, there are options that can make your trip easier. You may want to consider getting a visa on arrival (VOA) or visa exemption instead of having to apply for one in advance.

Like most countries, Thailand has several ways of granting visitors entry into their country. The first option is getting a visa at an embassy or consulate before entering the country; this allows travelers who have been granted visas by other countries’ consulates some leeway in terms of the type and number of days they’re allowed beyond their original stipulations. However, there’s another way: applying directly through Thai immigration officials at airports before flying out from Bangkok into Pattaya Beach or Phuket Town (or vice versa). This process takes only minutes when compared with waiting weeks for approval if done via mail application—and it saves money too.

Hi there, hoping you can help me.
I have applied for the Thai Pass three times now and have had nothing back. I have the required travel insurance through Covermore, have had three covid vaccines etc. I applied for my partner who is travelling with me and his approval and QR code came back within the hour. I have left messages with Covermore though have had no response. I have also written to the Thai Consulate link on the application page and have nothing back. We travel on July 9th though I just don;t want to leave it to the last minute to get this sorted. I am getting worried. Hope someone can help me.

      Hi Lyndel,

Nothing to worry, starting July 1st onwards it’s no longer required. But if you are still concerned, you can apply , try it again and make sure to put information correctly. https://tp.consular.go.th/

      Thank you
