Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) in Thailand

Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) in Thailand

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Thai Ministry of Public Health has required that any Thai or foreign nationals traveling to Thailand must secure a COVID-19 PCR test with a negative result, COVID-19 health insurance and they must undergo a mandatory quarantine at Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ) facilities.

The mandatory quarantine is required for foreigners permitted to enter Thailand such as diplomats and non-immigrant B visa with work permit holders including their families, business representatives and experts invited by the government, permanent residents, foreigners with Thai families such as Thai marriage visa holders, students and their guardians, medical tourists and their attendants, business visa holders, Thai Elite Visa holders, APEC Cardholders, special tourist visa (STV) holders, SETV tourist visa holders, non-immigrant O, OA and OX retirement visa holders and migrant workers with official documents.

What is Quarantine?

Quarantine is defined as public health practice used to protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease such as COVID-19. It is a separation and restriction of the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease such as COVID-19 to see if they become sick. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms.

What is Alternative State Quarantine or ASQ?

The ASQ is a process of quarantine at government-accredited hotels in Bangkok at the traveler’s own expense. For non-Thai nationality travelers, many hotels together with hospitals launched Alternative State Quarantine Packages for those returning from abroad. These hotels have been approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Defense.

What is Alternative State Quarantine or ASLQ?

ASLQ is the quarantine facilities in cities outside Bangkok such as Phuket, Pattaya, Buriram, and Prachinburi.

How long is the quarantine?

The mandatory quarantine is 14 days.

Can I quarantine in my own home?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to quarantine in your own home at this time. You have to undergo quarantine in the accredited hotels only.

What is the cost of the ASQ?

The cost may vary depending on the hotel with a price range from 28,000 THB to 220,000 for the 14-day mandatory quarantine with better facilities, good atmosphere, in a clean and safe environment.

What is included in the ASQ package?

Normally, the package includes 3 meals per day, complimentary WiFi and private car transfer from the airport. A nurse is on call 24/7, and you will have your temperature taken and health checked twice a day. The package also includes two COVID-19 tests that take place on the 5th and 13th day of your quarantine. If you have a fever of 37.5 degrees or more, you will be transferred to a hospital.

Process to reserve ASQ/ASLQ

  1. Make a room reservation directly to the ASQ/ASLQ hotel, when you know the date of entry to Thailand.
  2. The hotel will inform related authorities at the airport and will pick you up from the airport on arrival date/time.

    Hello,

I live in New York, USA and have booked a trip to Thailand in June last year.
My flight is scheduled for February 25, 2021.
Could you, please, tell me if I can enter Thailand and stay for 3 weeks without having a mandatory quarantine for 14 days if I have recently been vaccinated against COVID-19 ?

    • Rex
      January 21, 2021

      Dear Anatoly,
      Good day.
For all travellers, Thais and Foreigners, vaccinated or not vaccinated, you must undergo mandatory quarantine. Should you wish not to do quarantine, you may have to wait to travel to Thailand by end of 2021.
      Thank you.

I would like to do my quarantine on Phuket as it is my final destination. Currently there are no direct flights to Phuket. If I take flight with connection in Suvarnabhumi airport, am I still allowed to transit in Suvarnabhumi to proceed to my ASQ/ALQ destination?

    • Rex
      January 20, 2021

      Dear Sergey,
No. You cannot do the quarantine in Phuket if your flight arrives in Bangkok. You must do the quarantine in Bangkok. If you wish to do quarantine in Phuket, you must book an international commercial flight or private flight that arrives in Phuket. Please check with Qatar and Emirates for the future flights to Phuket.
      Thank you.

I am US citizen and plan travel to Chiang Mai via Bangkok. The arrival time at Bangkok airport is midnight and need to stay over in Bangkok or hotel near airport for the next morning flight to CM. CM has BP ChiangMai hotel as the ALQ hotel. Can I get quarantined in Chiang Mai instead of in Bangkok? Also, during quarantine can I have visitor to visit me? Thank you

You can do your quarantine in Chiang Mai if your international flight arrives in Chiang Mai. If your flight arrives in Bangkok, you must do your quarantine in Bangkok.

      Dear Jagannath,
      Good day.
I recommend for you to check with your local authorities. There are provinces now that would require 14-day self isolation if you have previously travel in the red zone provinces.
      Thank you.

I think my question got erased like some others before it so I take a screenshot this time to preserve it. My question is simple – my Thai fiance and myself co-habit together outside of Thailand. We live together 100% of the time (I work from home due to Coronavirus) and we travel together to Thailand in February so why should we stay apart for quarantine. Surely this makes no sense – in these circumstances can we stay together in ASQ ? Appreciate your response this time please. I may be able to get local embassy to vouch for us or give us a letter or something to verify our status.

If your Qatar airlines flight will fly from Bangkok to Samui and you do not disembark the aircraft in Bangkok, then you may do the quarantine in Samui.

Yes, US and Philippine passport holders can get 45 days visa exemption (including 15 days on quarantine) through this page:https://coethailand.mfa.go.th/regis/index?checkconfirm=true

Some hotels are offering 14 nights 15 days ASQ package or 15 nights 16 days packages. Just choose the one that has less ASQ package. You cannot oblige a hotel to decrease the number of nights if they only offer more days. You may choose another hotel.

Most ASQ hotels does not ask for full payment. Most of them will ask for the 10% to 50% deposit until you get the visa and COE.
Yes, the hotel may refund the deposit if your COE was rejected or you tested positive before the flight.

If the service you want to complain is about the staff, the food etc, you can complain to the hotel manager. If the complaint is regarding health issue, you may contact the hospital affiliated to this ASQ hotel.

If she choose ASQ, yes she has to pay for it because ASQ is not free. If she wants the state quarantine, she needs to check with the Thai Embassy and perhaps register for the free SQ.

Thanks Rex, I have communicate with Thai Embassy in Singapore. However, they have no idea on the Multiple Reentry Visa on PR extension of 1 year after it is due. They encourage me to fly back to Thailand to extend it. Reason it seems that Nation News reported that ASQ was not safe there. Few days ago a French woman got Covid19 during her ASQ stay. “Can you please provide me the link that said Thai PR validity extension within 1 year of expiry”. Many Thanks

    Hello.
I am an Australian looking to enter Thailand on the long-stay visa, up to 90 days and hopefully renewable after that time period.

I am looking at AQS in Buriram.

I believe there is no direct international airport in Buriram.

If there is no direct flight to Buriram, how do get to Buriram and undergo my 14-day quarantine?

    • Rex
      November 8, 2020

      Dear Jack,
      Good day.
This would be possible if you or your ASQ hotel in Buriram can arrange a private flight from Bangkok after your international arrival to Buriram Airport and then to your ASQ.
If this is not possible, you need to book an ASQ hotel in Bangkok and then proceed to Buriram on a normal domestic flight.
      Thank you.

Hello, my Panrajaa is visiting me in Germany and sadly have to return on November 25th. She was just telling me, that she has to change the flight, because the Lufthansa flight at 29th/30th of November would not qualify it’s passengers for a a state quarantine any longer. She told me that she would have to change the flight – costs of about 1.000 € – or would have to book a ASQ. I couldn’t understand the procedure showing on some websites she has pointed on. Is she right in interpretations the changed rules from starting of November?

      Dear Guido,
      Good day.
Unfortunately we cannot advise you about the free quarantine for the Thais. We mostly deal with foreigners so we can just advise you about the paid ASQ. I think it is cheaper for you to book her in an ASQ hotel rather changing the flight for 1,000 Euro. The ASQ hotels starts at 27,000-28,000 THB or even less.

Yes, you can fly to Phuket directly if there are flights arriving in Phuket. I believe today there was Emirates flight that landed in Phuket already. If you land in Phuket (without transit in Bangkok), you can undergo 14-day quarantine in the accredited hotels or resorts in Phuket. The ASQ hotels in Phuket are more expensive than those in Bangkok.

      Dear Riho,

You have to do your 14-day quarantine in Bangkok before you can fly to Chiang Mai. Unless your quarantine hotel in Chiang Mai can arrange a private jet from Bangkok to Chiang Mai with you as the only passenger to avoid any contact with local people.

I believe that you need an international flight to land if Chiang Mai if you wish to make the quarantine in Chiang Mai. If you arrive in Bangkok, you must quarantine in Bangkok because from the airport, you will be brought directly to your hotel by private car. If you land in Bangkok and travel to Chiang Mai, will it be a private plane? There should be no other passengers since you will be a risk to the domestic passengers.
