Travel to Thailand

Travelers may enter Thailand with or without quarantine based on their vaccination status and country of departure.

New entry requirements are being introduced on May 1, 2022. To know how you will need to enter Thailand as a vaccinated or unvaccinated traveler, please see below.

  1. Fully Vaccinated travelers will no longer need to apply to enter Thailand under the Test & Go or Sandbox scheme. A vaccinated traveler does not need to book 1 night’s accommodation in an approved SHA+ hotel or complete an RT-PCR test on arrival. Fully vaccinated foreigners will need to provide proof of insurance and their vaccination certificate when applying for Thailand Pass. Thai Nationals only need to provide their vaccination certificate as insurance is not required.

Unvaccinated children under 18 years old may travel with vaccinated parents without quarantine.

  2. Unvaccinated travelers will have 2 options for entering Thailand:
    • Unvaccinated travelers will be able to enter Thailand under the existing 5-day Alternate Quarantine scheme; OR
    • Unvaccinated travelers will be able to avoid the 5-day Alternate Quarantine by completing an RT-PCR test and uploading the result into their Thailand Pass application. The test cannot be older than 72 hours before their arrival date.

COVID-19 PCR Test

A pre-departure COVID-19 RT-PCR test is now only required for unvaccinated travelers who do not want to do the 5-day mandatory Alternate Quarantine on arrival. The test must be conducted within 72 hours before their international flight from their country of departure and it must be submitted to the Thailand Pass system in lieu of a vaccination certificate.

Note: Starting May 1, 2022, the RT-PCR testing will no longer be required when arriving in Thailand.

Do You Need a Visa to Enter Thailand?

Visitors from countries under the Visa Exemption List are not required to obtain a Thai visa in order to travel to Thailand for tourism purposes. The Thai Immigration Bureau will allow foreigners to stay in Thailand for 30 days. Tourists will be able to apply for a 30 days visa extension at any local immigration office in Thailand.

If you wish to stay longer or are traveling for a purpose other than tourism, please know that the normal 60-day Tourist Visa, Thai Elite Visa, and other non-immigrant visas are available at Thai Embassies or Consulates around the world. Holders of these visas are still required to apply for the Thailand Pass at the MFA website.

Do you want to stay in Thailand for 5, 10, or 20 years? You may consider the Thai Elite Visa program. It is an easy-to-apply and hassle-free visa application for your long-term stay in Thailand. For more information about the Thai Elite Membership and Visa application, you may check this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand-visa/thai-elite-visa

Applying for Thailand Pass

Everyone planning to come to Thailand needs to have a valid Thailand Pass to enter the country. It is mandatory during the COVID pandemic.

https://www.thaiembassy.com/travel-to-thailand/thailand-pass

Thailand Pass is a web-based system designed to support Thailand’s “Ease of Travel” system and make the documentation process of the travelers entering Thailand simpler and more efficient.

You may visit the MFA website https://tp.consular.go.th/ and apply for the Thailand Pass directly.

Applying for a Thailand Pass is even easier with the new changes being implemented on May 1. With fewer documents needing to be checked and confirmed, approval times will be much faster.

The documents you need to provide when applying for a Thailand Pass will depend on your vaccination status:

Vaccinated travelers:

  • Your passport profile page
  • A certificate of full (2 doses) vaccination
  • A medical insurance policy with at least USD$ 10,000 minimum coverage

Unvaccinated travelers NOT doing Alternate Quarantine:

  • Your passport profile page
  • An RT-PCR test result no more than 72 hours before your arrival date
  • A medical insurance policy with at least USD$ 10,000 minimum coverage

Unvaccinated travelers doing Alternate Quarantine:

  • Your passport profile page
  • Confirmed booking of SHA+ hotel 5-day Alternate Quarantine package
  • A pre-booked RT-PCR test on arrival (if not included in your package)
  • A medical insurance policy with at least USD$ 10,000 minimum coverage

It is advised to submit/register your Thailand Pass application at least 3 to 7 days before your scheduled departure. You cannot enter Thailand until you have received your Thailand Pass, so make sure you start the application process well in advance.

The application for the Thailand Pass is free. However, you may also retain a service provider who would assist you with your Thailand Pass application.

Thailand COVID Insurance for Foreigners

The COVID travel insurance certificate must be submitted to the Thai embassy when applying for the visa and Thailand Pass and needs to state explicitly that the health insurance is for 10,000 USD or more and COVID-19 is covered. The insurance policy must cover the duration of your stay in Thailand. If your insurance does not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to travel to Thailand.

Thailand Health Screening

With the spread of COVID-19, many countries, like Thailand, have been implementing new screening methods and health controls for travel at airports.

When arriving in Thailand, it is good practice to print a copy of all the documents you uploaded to your Thailand Pass Application. This will help Immigration Officers approve your entry through passport control faster and potentially avoid those embarrassing moments when electronic devices run out of battery or Apps crash.

The documents you should print are:

  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Hotel booking confirmation (unvaccinated Alternate Quarantine)
  • RT-PCR test result (unvaccinated No Quarantine)
  • Vaccination certificate
  • COVID-19 recovery certificate (if previously tested positive)
  • TM6 – This is the blue card they give you on the plane.

When Will Flights to Thailand Resume?

Regarding flights to Thailand, the normal commercial passenger flights are operating as normal. Before booking flights to Thailand, travelers should ensure that they study the different categories of visas granted to foreign nationals at this time to determine the possibility of travel.
Check within your country’s state department for travel advisories during COVID-19.

How to choose your quarantine hotel if unvaccinated?

You have to consider first what your needs are before booking a hotel room to make your quarantine stay as comfortable as possible.

Do some research before booking any quarantine hotel room for your travel plan. Consider your budget, room size, and hotel policies. Quarantine rules often change and are sometimes on short notice, so it is important to understand the hotel cancellation and refund policies before you confirm your booking.

Check the hotel reviews to get feedback from the customer experiences. Ask the right questions. This will help make your decision. Find a focal point between comfort, amenities, and price.

List of Quarantine Hotels in Bangkok

The SHA+ Alternate Quarantine packages include not only accommodation but also full board meals, transportation to the hotel, standby nurses and COVID-19 tests that are conducted by the partner hospital during the quarantine. Here are some of the highly recommended ASQ hotels in Bangkok offering ASQ and Test and Go packages:

Foreign travelers who do not wish to stay in designated Alternative Quarantine or AQ may opt to spend their mandatory quarantine in Golf Quarantine, Yacht Quarantine, and Villa Quarantine accredited by the Thai government, to boost the tourism sector.

Have the requirements for using sealed flights for international travellers to get to Koh Samui via Bangkok been withdrawn from 1 May 2022?

      Dear Susan,

If you are fully vaccinated, the sealed flight will not matter anymore. As soon as you land in Bangkok, you are free to travel anywhere.

    Hello,
I am booking a trip to Koh Samui with a stop off in Bangkok. Will it be fine to get two separate flights on the same day? One being international from London and the other being domestic to Koh Samui.

Also, would I have to book the covid hotel in Koh Samui?

I am slightly confused by the rules.

    • March 15, 2022

      Dear Toby,

No, it is not allowed. You need to have a sealed flight from BKK to Samui using the Bangkok Airways flight PG51xx. Your sealed domestic flight must be included in the same ticket as your international flight.
      Thank you.

Hey! Quick question. If I get the Thailand pass, can I travel freely through Thailand? I know I have to stay in a special hotel on the first and fifth day. But can I stay in Bangkok for the first day and then travel to Koh Samui and stay in a special hotel in Koh Samui for the fifth day? Or do I need to start the whole process over if I go from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

    • March 15, 2022

      Dear Max,

Once you have a Thailand Pass, you can enter Thailand on the date specified in your Thailand Pass. When you arrive in Thailand and undergo the 1 night Test and Go, you will be allowed to travel or freedom of movement after you receive the negative result on your RT PCR test on Day 1. You do not need RT PCR test on Day 5. You will do a self-test on Day 5. You can stay in Bangkok for 1 night and after that you can go to Samui. In Samui you can stay in any hotel.
      Thank you.
