Thailand Tourist Visa: Everything You Need To Know

If you’re planning a holiday in Thailand, you’ll need a Thailand Tourist Visa to enter the country. This visa comes in two types: a Single-Entry Tourist Visa, which allows up to a 60-day stay, and a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa, valid for six months with a 60-day stay limit per visit.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different Tourist Visa options, explain the requirements, and cover alternative options like the Visa Exemption scheme for eligible passport holders seeking a shorter 30-day stay.

What is a Thailand Tourist Visa?

The Thailand Tourist Visa is a stamp or document provided by a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country, allowing entry for tourism or medical purposes. You can also apply online through the Thailand e-visa system, which some embassies exclusively use, meaning walk-ins are not permitted. Contact the embassy you will be applying from beforehand to learn more.

The Thai Tourist Visa differs from the Visa Exemption stamp, placed in your passport upon arrival in Thailand. Remember that you are not allowed to work in Thailand while holding this visa, as it’s only for tourism purposes.

Tourist Visa for Thailand

Single-Entry Tourist Visa

  • Visa Duration: Valid for 3 months from the date of issue
  • Visa Type: Single entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
  • Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days at a Thai immigration office
  • Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
  • Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.

The Single-Entry Tourist Visa is perfect for travelers planning one visit to Thailand. It allows a stay of up to 60 days, with the option to extend by 30 days once in Thailand. Upon leaving Thailand, this visa expires, and you will need a new visa to re-enter.

Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa

  • Visa Duration: Valid for 6 months from the date of issue
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
  • Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days per entry
  • Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
  • Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.

Visa on Arrival

If you’re from one of the 31 approved countries or regions, you can apply for a Visa on Arrival at immigration checkpoints when entering Thailand for tourism. This visa allows a stay of up to 15 days. To apply, you’ll need a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and the visa fee, which must be paid in cash, in Thai baht, upon arrival.

Visa Exemption

If you’re from one of 93 approved countries, you can enter Thailand under the Thai visa exemption program for tourism, business, urgent tasks, or short-term work for up to 60 days. This stay may be extended by an additional 30 days, though this decision is at the discretion of the immigration officer processing your application. To stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a different visa type before reaching the 90-day maximum.

90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa

The 90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa is a solid choice if you plan to stay in Thailand for purposes beyond tourism, such as business, education, or retirement. It grants an initial 90-day stay and can be extended to a one-year visa for specific reasons, like retirement or marriage, through the Thai Immigration Bureau. You can apply by mail, in person at a Thai Embassy or Consulate, or through the Thailand E-Visa portal, offering flexibility in the application process.

The Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa lets you enter Thailand as many times as you like within its six-month validity, but each stay is capped at 60 days. If you want to stay longer, you can extend your visit by 30 days at a Thai immigration office, which adds more flexibility to your travel plans. This visa is perfect for those who plan to take multiple trips to Thailand over six months, allowing plenty of time to explore.

Long-Term Thai Tourist Visas

If you plan on frequently visiting Thailand or staying here for extended periods of time, dealing with a Thai tourist visa is a frequent headache. Fortunately, there are alternative tourist visas intended for these needs. There are two long-term Thai tourist visas you can consider:

Thai Elite Visa

  • Visa Duration: Options for 5, 10, 15, or 20 years (based on chosen membership package)
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: 1 year
  • Extendable: Automatically renewed within the membership period
  • Obtainable From: Thailand Elite Visa agents and Thailand Privilege Card Company Limited
  • Option to Include Family: Yes, an additional fee applies per family member

The Thai Elite Visa provides a hassle-free, long-term stay for foreigners without the need for frequent renewals. Each entry permits a stay of up to one year without the need for a re-entry permit. Elite Visa holders also enjoy fast-tracked immigration, exclusive support, and discounts on services like airport transfers, healthcare, and leisure activities. Family members can be added to the membership for an additional fee, making it a flexible option for those wishing to reside comfortably in Thailand long-term.

DTV Visa Thailand

  • Visa Duration: 5 years
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: 180 days
  • Extendable: Yes, once per entry
  • Obtainable From: A Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate or online via Thailand’s official e-visa website
  • Option to Include Family: Yes

With a DTV Visa, you can leave and re-enter Thailand as often as you like without needing a re-entry permit, unlike other Thai tourist visas. Each entry allows a 180-day stay, after which you can simply exit and re-enter Thailand to reset for another 180 days.

Alternatively, you can extend your stay once per entry to add 180 days on top of your current stay. By doing so, you can remain in Thailand for nearly a full year before needing to leave and re-enter.

But this visa isn’t available to just anyone, unlike the tourist and Thailand Elite Visas. To qualify, you must be a remote worker or “digital nomad” with proven employment or participate in so-called Thai Soft Power Activities.

What are the Requirements for a Thai Tourist Visa?

When applying for a Thailand Tourist Visa, you will need to present a collection of documents and pay an application fee. However, both the fee and required documents can change without notice and may vary by country and embassy. It’s recommended that you contact your local Thai Embassy to confirm the latest requirements, price, and whether an in-person application is necessary.

Some countries offer a digital option, the Thai E-Visa, which provides a faster way to obtain your Thailand Tourist Visa. Be sure to ask about the E-Visa when reaching out to your local Thai Embassy.

The documents required to apply for the Thailand Tourist Visa include:

  • A completed application form
  • A passport or travel document with at least six months of validity
  • A passport-sized photograph
  • Onward/return travel tickets (paid in full)
  • Proof of financial stability, such as a bank statement (10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family)
  • Proof of hotel booking or private accommodation arrangements

Thai Tourist Visa FAQ

How do I get a tourist visa for Thailand?

You can apply online for a 60-Day Tourist Visa, which allows a 60-day stay upon entry and can be extended for an additional 30 days. Alternatively, you can enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption program, giving you 60 days upon arrival, with the option to extend for another 30 days. You must apply from a country with a Royal Thai Embassy either in person or via the e-Visa system.

How much does a Thai Tourist Visa cost?

The cost of a Thai Tourist Visa depends on the applicant’s country of residence and the visa type (single-entry or multiple-entry). It’s best to check with the nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate for current visa fees, as prices and payment methods can vary by location.

How long does it take to process a Thai Tourist Visa?

The processing time for a Thai Tourist Visa usually ranges from 2 to 10 business days, depending on the consulate or embassy where you apply and whether you apply in person or by mail. Applications submitted online or at major embassies may be processed more quickly, while others might take a few extra days.

Can I apply for a Thai Tourist Visa online?

Certain nationalities can apply for a Thai Tourist Visa online through Thailand’s official e-Visa portal. This process enables you to complete forms, upload documents, and pay fees electronically. Once approved, you’ll receive a confirmation email to present upon arrival in Thailand.

  1. Hello, I’m from the Philippines but currently here in CANADA, I am planning to visit Thailand this first week of September for a vacation before going home, how long can I stay there and do I need to apply for a tourist visa? Thanks

    1. Hello Carlo,

Philippine passport holders, regardless of where they’re traveling from, can enter Thailand for free under the 60-day visa exempt entry program. You can extend that stay one time for 30 more days at a local immigration office after you arrive.

  2. Hello, im planning to visit Thailand as a Tourist in late October – early November. When should I apply online for the visa to cover my whole trip, considering that I’m applying from France / Paris (im not French but I live there)

    1. Dear vanina,

Unless your passport is from a country that isn’t eligible for Thailand’s 60-day visa exemption (available to over 90 nationalities), there’s no need to apply for a tourist visa in advance.
However, if you do plan to apply for a tourist visa through the Thai consulate in Paris, it’s best to do so at least 6 weeks before your intended travel date, as processing times can be long.
Here’s the official eVisa link: https://www.thaievisa.go.th/

  3. Hi.. I’m an Indonesian. I want to visit Thailand for vacation. What are the requirements for applying a tourist visa?
    Thanks

    1. Hello Renny,

Indonesian passport holders do not need to apply for a visa before traveling to Thailand. You qualify for the 60-day visa exemption program. You can arrive, get stamped in, and stay for 60 days without any visa fee.

  4. Hi,
If we are Australian citizens travelling to Thailand for 2 weeks on a tourist visa, can we get the visa on arrival? Or do we need to apply for TDAC?

    1. Dear Paul,

I doubt you’re entering on a tourist visa, which you would apply for at a Thai consulate before traveling. As an Australian, you’re not eligible for a Visa on Arrival — that’s for 31 countries, valid for 15 days, and costs 2,000 THB.

You’re likely referring to the visa exemption program. Australians can enter without applying for a visa and receive a free 60-day entry stamp. It’s not a Visa on Arrival or a visa — just a visa-exempt entry stamp.

You still need to complete the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card), required for all foreign travelers. It can be submitted online starting 3 days before arrival, up to the day you arrive.

  5. Hi hello im now here in HuaHin my visa is until 60 days but planning to extend for more 30 days,, may i know what is the possible requirements for this thank you ?

    1. Hello Charie,

You can apply for a 30-day extension at either the Blueport Mall location or the main immigration office in Hua Hin. The fee is 1,900 THB. You’ll need copies of your passport data page, current entry stamp, TM30 receipt (which your accommodation filed when you checked in), and one passport-size photo. There are copy shops near the immigration offices if you need them.

    1. Dear Tracy,

You may upload a copy of your driver license if the address is consistent with the address you provided in your application. You may also upload a copy of your latest utility bills showing the address of your current location. If you are in a country outside the country of your nationality or permanent residence, you may upload copy of your hotel booking.

  6. Greetings. My name is Stephen Lobo (Indian) and my wife name is Jean Esguerra (Philippines). We both are holding a valid passport and planned to visit Bangkok for 3 days next week during Eid Al Adha holidays. What is the process of acquiring tourist visa during arrival in Bangkok or can we get an exemption as per the program?

    1. Dear Stephen,

Both Indian and Philippine passport holders currently receive a 60-day entry stamp under the visa exemption program. Make sure you file the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card) through the online system. You can submit it starting 3 days before your arrival up until you reach the arrival hall before being stamped in.

  7. Hi. Do I need to apply for Visa if I want to visit Thailand. I’m Latvian, with Latvian passport living in UK.
    Regards Agris

    1. Dear Agris,

No, you don’t need a visa. Since July 15, 2024, Latvian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for 60 days under the Visa Exempt Entry Program.

  8. I have a holiday booked for the end of this year (December 25 / January 26). It is fully booked and paid for, airfares and most accommodation. It was designed to comply with the current 60 day visa exemption, however I now read that the exemption period might be reduced back to 30 days.
    What should I do?
I am travelling with my family but they are all Thai passport holders so they can stay as long as they want.
    Mike

    1. Dear Michael,

Whether the initial stay is changed to 30 days or not, it won’t significantly affect your trip. You can always apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office where you are staying for 1,900 baht. Alternatively, you can obtain a tourist visa from the Thai consulate in your country before traveling, which grants a 60-day stay upon arrival.

  9. Greetings,

I am a Saudi citizen planning to travel to Thailand in June, specifically on June 11, 2025. My itinerary includes spending 5 days in Phuket, followed by a 3-day trip to Vietnam, and then returning to Thailand for 2 additional days in preparation for my return home on June 21, 2025.

I would appreciate your guidance regarding the necessary documents, and whether a multiple-entry visa for Thailand is required, considering that Saudi citizens are currently exempt from obtaining a visa.

    THANK YOU

    1. Dear Faisal,

Saudi Arabian passport holders do not need a visa to enter Thailand. You can arrive and receive a free 60-day entry stamp under the visa exemption program

  10. Hi
We are travelling to Thailand on June 2025
I am from Saint Kitts and Navis and my husband is from Syria
    We applied for E-visa
But I am a house wife (i have no job)
And they asked for my bank statement, which is less than 2500 dirham, what can I do?

    1. Dear Lina,

You both need to apply for a Thai visa before coming to Thailand through the eVisa online system via the consulate in your country.
You may use a joint bank statement showing double the required amount (40,000 baht total for families) when applying for a tourist visa.

Please note that St Kitts and Nevis passport holders currently in St Kitts should apply through the Thai consulate in Ottawa using the eVisa online system:
      https://ottawa.thaiembassy.org/

  11. Hi, my spouse and I are going to Koh Samui, from Australia via Singapore in late August this year 7 days. We will be travelling with other family members on this short trip. My question do we need to apply for a Visa. Any help appreciated.

    1. Hello Gary,

If you are both Australian nationals, you can arrive and receive a free 60-day entry stamp under the visa exemption program. No visa is needed for your trip.

  12. I am a US citizen and will be in Thailand for 60 days in May and June. I just have contacted Siam Legal about applying for the retirement visa. What I would like to know is if 60 days is enough time for the application to be processed and approved. I understand that your firm is experiencing a significant increase in the request for this Visa. I would be working with your Chang Mai office. Thanks for your help
    Evelyn Kendall

    1. Dear Evelyn,

If you already have a Thai bank account, it is possible to convert your tourist visa to a Non-Immigrant visa within Thailand. However, if you do not have a Thai bank account, it is recommended that you apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa before your arrival, as tourists are not permitted to open a bank account in Thailand.

  13. Hello my name is samuel i am going to Thailand in October for 1 month but would like to extend to 60 days whats the best way to do this thanks.

    1. Hello Samuel,

People from 90+ countries can enter Thailand for free with a 60-day visa exempt stamp. But if your passport isn’t on that list, you’ll need to apply for a tourist visa online through the eVisa website via the Thai consulate in your country before traveling: https://www.thaievisa.go.th/

  14. Hi … we are travelling to Thailand and staying for 32 days …. We fly from Nth Qld Australia in 5 weeks. If we need a visa can we apply for it once we arrive at Bangkok airport … as if we need to apply in Australia we would have to post our passports to the Sydney embassy and are afraid our passports won’t arrive back in time as they quote 4-6 weeks turnaround

    1. Hello, Glen.

You will need to apply for a visa at the Embassy in Sydney if you wish to stay for 32 days, but if you wish to apply for a visa upon arriving at the Bangkok airport, you can come to Thailand and stay for a maximum of 30 days through the Visa Exemption Scheme, as Australia is one of the listed countries that qualify for the Visa Exemption.

  43. hello Yordmanu

From Bangalore India, for a Thailand Tourist VISA the Thai Embassy representatives are asking for payslips or IT returns files of 2 years even though there’s sufficient balance in the bank statement shown to them. Is this mandatory? How can this be approached.

  44. Hi I am Polish and will be in Thailand from the 1 Jan 2023 on a 60 day tourist visit and would like to extend it to another 30 days (will be 90 days in Thailand). I would like to spend some time in Thailand and plan to marry my thai girl later on. But the visa will be expired before that happens. So, iI leave Thailand after 90 days (with granted extension visa) and visit another country can I re-apply for a new Visa ? And if I can, can I do so online?
In such a case, I can come back into Thailand and for how long. And how many times I can leave Thailand to visit other countries and come back to Thailand again for how many times per year?

  50. Hi.
My plan is to fly to Thailand mid February 2023 from Australia.
I would like to stay for 45 days or maybe 60 days.
Looking at some of the information regarding the 45 day visa it is a bit confusing.
The impression I get is that I have to arrive with an exit flight date 30 days from arrival.
    Is this the case.?
Can I have a return ticket pre booked for 45 days or 60 days when I arrive at Bangkok airport.?
Do I have to pre apply for a 60 day visa before leaving Australia.?
Do I have to pre apply for a 45 day visa before leaving Australia.?
I will be leaving Thailand by air to return to Australia.
    Best Regards.
