Income Tax in Thailand

Do retirees pay income tax?

I am planning to retire in Thailand. I was wondering about the following issue. Do Swiss nationals pay personal income tax as retirees in Thailand?

Only income earned inside Thailand shall be subjected to tax during retirement. Therefore, you will not be obliged to pay any taxes for any income you have earned from overseas. Also, personal income taxes are not required for retirees in Thailand. Note that you can’t work in Thailand while on a retirement visa.

You would need to apply for a work permit. Once you stopped working you would have to leave Thailand and return with a 90-day OA visa and start the process again of extending the retirement visa for 1 year.

  3. In this article, you mentioned that tax is payable on income generated in Thailand. Does this mean that I have to submit an annual tax return as a retiree? I wont have a tax file number?

    1. Dear Suresh,
A retirement visa holder cannot have an income generated in Thailand. So you do not pay tax in Thailand. Having an income from within Thailand is a violation of your retirement visa conditions.
      Thank you.

  4. Can you please confirm if the above is still current. That someone on a Retirement Visa does not pay income tax on monies earned outside Thailand and tax is only due if you work and earn money inside Thailand. Many thanks

    1. If you will retire in Thailand, you are not liable for taxes. You will only pay Taxes if you will earn money inside Thailand from a Thai company or if you have your own company in Thailand. If you need more information, you can email our consultants [email protected]

    1. Retired Foreign nationals in Thailand does not subject to Tax. Dividends on your investment abroad is not subject for Tax. However, if you will purchase property or engage in working with a Thai registered company, you will be subject for Tax.
