During the global COVID-19 pandemic, measures were enforced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Thailand. This included introducing an online registration called Thailand Pass to keep the influx of visitors to Thailand in check. The system monitored the health and vaccination status of potential visitors so they could be approved to enter the country safely.
Foreigners who want to visit Thailand must comply with these measures and below are the steps to make it easy.

Thai Pass Required Documents
Please have the following documents ready.
- Passport Information page
- Buy Thailand Travel Insurance
- Flight Itinerary
- Hotel booking confirmation
- Vaccination record (if any)
The application process will take 5-10 minutes.
Thai Pass Average Approval Time:
1 – 6 hours.
Incorrect documents will delay the application process.
Step 1 – Check your eligibility
It’s important to start your Thailand travel plans by checking your eligibility. You need to determine your purpose of travel and look at your vaccination status. In this part, you will check if you need to apply for a visa, and what documents you will need when applying for a Thailand Pass.
For most travelers coming to Thailand for a holiday, you can apply for a Thailand Pass and enter Thailand without a visa under the Visa Exemption program.
If entering Thailand for a different purpose of stay, you need to apply for a Thailand Pass and obtain a Thai visa before coming to Thailand. In the next step, you can check the visas available to you.
Step 2 – Apply for the Visa
Thailand Elite Visa
Do you want to stay in Thailand for 5, 10, or 20 years? You may consider the Thai Elite Visa program. It is an easy-to-apply and hassle-free visa application for your long-term stay in Thailand. For more information about the Thai Elite Membership and Visa application, you may check this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand-visa/thai-elite-visa
Visa Exemption
Nationalities eligible for the Visa Exemption Program may enter Thailand without a visa pre-approved by the Thai Embassy or Consulate. A traveler may apply for the Thailand Pass online. Upon arriving in Thailand, the traveler may stay for 15 – 30 days.
Tourist Visa and Special Tourist Visa (STV)
Foreigners may also apply for a Tourist Visa from their local Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for an additional 30 days, or the 90-day special tourist visa (STV), which can receive two 90-day visa extensions at the local immigration office.
Non-Immigrant Visa
Foreigners may also apply for a wide range of non-immigrant visas:
- Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
- Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
- Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand as well as their Parents or Legal Guardians
- Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
- Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for long stay (it is different from type O visa)

Step 3 – Book a Flight, Hotel, and COVID-19 Insurance
The main requirements for a Thai visa and Thailand Pass application are; COVID-19 Travel Insurance, proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test result, and flight booking.
Flights to Thailand
At present, most airlines, such as Qatar, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, All Nippon, Finnair, Thai Airways, and other major airlines are operating flights to Thailand on a daily or weekly basis.
Travelers do not need to give proof of a flight booking, but when applying for a Thailand Pass, a traveler will need to enter a flight number into the system.
Before booking flights to Thailand, travelers should confirm the different categories of Thai visas granted to foreign nationals to figure out if travel is possible.
Please note that having a plane ticket does not guarantee entry to Thailand. Non-Thai travelers must have all the required documents such as Thailand Pass and insurance to enter Thailand.
Hotel Updates
From June 1, vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers do not need to book a SHA+ hotel. Travelers can enter the Kingdom and travel freely, booking one of the many wonderful hotels in Thailand.
Though you do not need to provide proof of a hotel booking when completing a Thailand Pass application, you need to enter the address of where you will stay for your first night in Thailand.
Book Your COVID Insurance
COVID-19 Travel Insurance for Foreigners
You’ll need to buy COVID-19 Insurance that meets the requirements of the Thai authorities. These include:
- Coverage of up to at least USD $10,000 for medical expenses because of injury or sickness including COVID-19
- The COVID-19 travel insurance policy must cover the length of your stay in Thailand. It can be 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, or 180 days.
A certificate will be provided to help applications for the Thai visa and Thailand Pass, as well as to present to relevant authorities when departing/arriving for Thailand.
NOTE: Thai authorities may reject your Visa and Thailand Pass application if you do not have the correct format for Health Insurance. In order to have the correct insurance for Thailand Pass, it is advisable to buy insurance from a reputable company such as AXA with its easy online application and receive the insurance certificate within minutes.
Step 4 – Vaccination and Pre-departure Testing
A traveler’s vaccination status will decide how they apply for a Thailand Pass.
Vaccinated travelers will need to provide the following document for Thailand Pass:
- Vaccination Certificate
Unvaccinated travelers will need to complete:
- A Pro-ATK or RT-PCR test within 72 hours before departing their home country. This test result must be uploaded into a Thailand Pass application.
Step 5 – Apply for the Thailand Pass
All travelers must apply for the Thailand Pass before their intended date of arrival.
To apply for the Thailand Pass, visit https://tp.consular.go.th/ and fill in your personal details on the Thailand Pass registration page.
Upload supporting documents such as a copy of passport, copy of valid visa, vaccination certificate, or Pro-ATK test result, and COVID-19 travel insurance.
Check your email for confirmation of application and approved QR code.
From June 1, Thailand Pass will approve instantly if the correct documents are provided.
Step 6 – Prepare the documents for your flight
Once you have received your Thailand Pass approval, prepare the following documents for your trip to Thailand. You should print these documents and present them to your airline before departure and Immigration Officers on arrival:
- Thailand Pass
- Valid Thai visa in your passport or electronic visa approval (if applicable)
- COVID 19 travel insurance certificate or all pages of terms and conditions relating to COVID-19 cover and medical benefits. You may be refused to board the flight if the insurance does not meet this requirement.
- Copy of confirmed flight reservation
- COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate (if vaccinated)
- Pro-ATK or RT-PCR test result (if unvaccinated)

ALERT
Siam Legal has received reports from potential clients that some hospitals are creating difficulties for them until full payment is made for their medical expenses. Also, foreigners have allegedly been threatened with lawsuits for not settling their medical bills before being discharged. Using out-of-country policies can be problematic. We recommend using insurance providers headquartered inside Thailand with proper cover to avoid any undesirable outcomes.
Siam Legal International, a premier law firm in Thailand, recommends purchasing the proper insurance and so endorses AXA Insurance for your travel to Thailand insurance needs.
HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT POINTS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING THAILAND PASS INSURANCE
- Please review the details of any insurance before purchasing to understand if the policy has adequate cover. Cheap policies with inadequate levels of cover can lead to significant personal liability, and scenarios where policy holders incur hundreds of thousands of baht in out-of-pocket medical expenses have been reported. There are significant financial risks to being underinsured during your stay in Thailand.
- These policies do not cover medical costs from accidents (like motorcycle accidents) or common unexpected illnesses (common fever or food poisoning). Best to pay a few baht more for the peace of mind that comes from having proper coverage.
- AXA covers medical expenses (outpatient and inpatient) for accidents and illnesses, including COVID-19. Other insurance coverage might not.
- AXA also covers telemedicine and teleconsultation, which may be required during the quarantine period of any traveler.
Thai hospital staff are familiar with AXA cover, which should prevent any inconvenience during hospital admission or medical treatment from your hotel room. AXA Thailand also offers 24/7 local support during your stay in Thailand.

From what I understand about the latest news update, fully vaccinated travellers flying into Thailand on May 1,2022 or later are no longer required to have the PCR Covid Test on arrival. However, a self-ATK test is “recommended” during their stay.
My question is:
1) is the self-ATK test not mandatory?
2) if the self-ATK test is positive at one point of time during the stay in Thailand, what are the proper steps that need to be taken?
Please kindly elaborate
Hi Felix,
You’re right. No self ATK effective on May 1, 2022.
