Thailand has closed all its borders in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19 since March this year under the invocation of the Emergency Decree dated March 25, 2020.
Starting October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021 Thailand will allow limited numbers of long stay foreign tourists under the Special Tourist Visa (STV) Program. The visa is valid for 90 days which can be extended for another two 90-day extensions. This long stay visa is open to foreign nationals travelling to Thailand with the intention to stay long term as tourist to boost the tourism industry. The foreigner must apply for the certificate or permission of entry to Thailand from the local Thai Embassy or consulate. All requests will be forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and together with the Ministry of Labour and Board of Investment Thailand, all applications or requests will be assessed on a case to case basis, taking into account the urgency, economic importance while balancing these with health security consideration among others.

Note: In case the foreign national does not have a valid visa or has an expired non-immigrant visa, he or she can submit all the required documents and a filled-in visa application requesting for the Non-immigrant visa and the Thai embassy or consulate will issue the certificate of Entry and the visa altogether.

On July 3, 2020 the Civil Aviation Authority has partially lifted the travel ban to Thailand. The qualified foreigners may apply for the certificate of entry from their local Thai Embassy and they may now start to travel to Thailand.
