Top 20 Questions on Thailand Pass

I am an expat leaving Thailand for a short time and returning. Do I have to apply for Thailand Pass and Test & Go?

Yes. At this time, all people entering Thailand must apply for a Thailand Pass and follow Test & Go requirements if they are fully vaccinated. This includes having the required entry requirements such as insurance, SHA+ hotel booking, RT-PCR test, and Thailand Pass approval.

I am an expat returning to Thailand. Can I quarantine at home instead of a hotel?

No. No matter what visa you hold in Thailand, you must follow the Test & Go entry requirements. You must spend 1 night in a SHA+ quarantine hotel while waiting for your RT-PCR test result.

Have the April 1 changes to pre-departure RT-PCR testing come into effect?

Yes. Pre-departure RT-PCR tests are no longer required when entering Thailand.

Has the April 1 change come into effect for the Sandbox scheme?

Yes. The Sandbox scheme now requires only 5 nights of quarantine in the Sandbox designated area. Visitors must now do 1 x RT-PCR test and 1 x ATK test on day 5 instead of 2 x RT-PCR tests. The Test & Go program is a better option for those who are fully vaccinated.

Have the April 1 changes come into effect for the un-vaccinated Alternate Quarantine scheme?

Yes. The Alternate Quarantine timeframe has been reduced from 10 nights to 5 nights. You still need to have 2 x RT-PCR tests during this time. The tests will be taken on Day 1 and on Day 4 or 5.

I booked a 10-day Alternate Quarantine package but I am arriving after April 1. What should I do with the new changes?

You may contact your hotel. If you have not arrived in Thailand before April 1, you are eligible for the updated 5-day Alternate Quarantine scheme. Your hotel will advise what options are available to you.

Do I need to print my Thailand Pass documents for when I arrive at Passport Control in Thailand?

Yes. It is the best practice as you will present these documents to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

If you only have digital copies and something happens to your electronic device, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

How do I present my Thailand Pass QR code if my mobile phone is not working?

You should print a hard copy of your Thailand Pass QR code. If your mobile device does not work in Thailand, you can still present the QR code to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

Can I upload my Thailand Pass QR code to the MorChana App before I arrive in Thailand?

No. You can download the MorChana App before arriving in Thailand, but it will not allow uploads until you arrive in the country. You may ask your SHA+ hotel staff to assist you on how to navigate the app.

If I land in Phuket with the correct insurance, my SHA+ hotel, airport transfer, and separate RT-PCR tests booked, can I apply for Test & Go?

Yes. The above requirements are required to apply for Test & Go and Thailand Pass. You will also need to be vaccinated to apply for Test & Go.

Have the April 1 changes affected domestic flights in Thailand?

No. When landing in Thailand, domestic flights on arrival must still be approved “sealed” flights. Please check with Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways for the new list of sealed flights to Phuket and Samui.

Can I do my Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya?

Yes. If you land in Bangkok you can organize Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya. Your SHA+ hotel must provide transport from Bangkok airport to the hotel.

If your flight lands directly at Pattaya airport you will do your RT-PCR test at the airport and then be transported to your hotel.

Are international flights landing in Pattaya?

There are flights now landing directly at Pattaya U-tapao International Airport. Check with your airline provider for available direct flights.

Can I take a domestic flight from Bangkok to Pattaya for Test & Go quarantine?

Only if the flight is an approved “sealed” flight. This should be booked as part of your international flight itinerary.

If you book separate domestic flights, you are required to quarantine for 1 night in Bangkok before traveling to Pattaya.

What SHA+/AQ hotels are available in Pattaya?

You can find the latest information for SHA+/AQ hotels in Pattaya at Agoda.

Why is my US credit card being rejected when trying to book my RT-PCR test?

There is an issue with www.thailandpsas.com approving transactions with American credit cards. You can contact your hotel and they will organize the RT-PCR test booking for you.

I am trying to book hotel transport in Phuket with an American credit card and it is rejected. What can I do?

Transport from the airport to your hotel should be included in your SHA+ quarantine package. If there is an issue booking your hotel with an American credit card, try a different card or purchase through PayPal.

My hotel in Phuket does not offer transport from the hotel. What should I do?

Any SHA+/AQ hotel should include transport from the airport to their hotel. If they do not offer this service, it is best to look at different hotels because you cannot organize private transport.

Where can I see if hotel transfer is included in Phuket when looking at Agoda?

Many Phuket hotels do not list Airport Transfer on their front page. Click into the hotel and look at the bottom left corner of the details page. Airport transfer will be listed here under services offered.

How do I book a private transfer from the airport to a hotel in Phuket?

You cannot. Transfer from Phuket airport to your hotel must be provided by the hotel so it meets all Covid safety measures.

What are the current implementing rules regarding the visa amnesty or COVID extension?

  • Visas or permits to stay that are still valid and updated by the local Thai immigration office.
  • Foreigners holding a long-term visa such as a working visa, marriage visa, or retirement are required to apply for their yearly extension at the Thai immigration office as usual.
  • Foreigners do not need any embassy letter to be granted the automatic visa extension due to COVID-19.

Is the COVID-19 visa extension free of charge?

The COVID-19 extension of the visa costs 1,900 Thai baht.

Will the visa amnesty be extended?

The validity of the visa amnesty is until March 25, 2022 only. There is no indication that this visa amnesty or grace period will be extended.

What will happen when the visa amnesty is lifted or not extended anymore?

90-Day Reporting

If you are a foreigner staying in Thailand for a period longer than 90 consecutive days holding a Non-Immigrant Visa or Extension of Stay, you are required by Thai Immigration to report your current address every 90 days. You may file for the TM47 notification in person, by mail, online, or by an agent. Please check this page: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/90-day-reporting-immigration.php

Consequences of Visa Overstay

During this COVID-19 crisis in Thailand, some foreign nationals may find themselves overstaying in Thailand, do so by mistake, by miscalculating the length of their stay, forgetting their visa expiration date, or by unforeseen cancellation of their flights due to travel restrictions. As a traveler, you should strongly avoid overstaying in Thailand, but if you do find yourself in Thailand on an expired visa it is very important that you act fast and in the right way. Please check this page to learn more of the consequences of overstaying in Thailand: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/overstay-visa-thailand.php

Frequently Asked Questions

To extend a tourist visa, do I need to visit the Thai immigration office in person? I do not want to go to crowded areas at risk of COVID-19 infection.

Yes, there have been no changes regarding the visa extension application whether it is your first time to extend or the second time to extend. The application is still done in person. Thai immigration offices are practicing different measures such as social distancing and disinfecting the area to make sure that the applicants are not at risk of contracting the COVID-19. You might want to see if your local Thai immigration is open on Saturdays. That is a less crowded day of the week to visit the immigration office.

I have tried online reporting and reporting through a mobile app, both attempts failed. What are my other options?

If the online and mobile app reporting does not work, you need to do the reporting by yourself or you can ask a visa agent or third party to do the 90-day address reporting. You need to provide a power of attorney and the 90-day reporting documents such as the original and copy of the passport. There is no immigration fee for address reporting.

Is it required by law to wear a face mask?

The emergency decree issued by the Thai Government that came into effect recommends everyone wear a face mask when they are outside of their residence. However, some provinces such as Phuket have their own rule and you will be subject to a penalty. In Bangkok, commuters are required to wear a face mask when using public transportation and while in public places.

Should I carry my passport at all times?

Yes. If you are a foreigner and you will be out of your residence or hotel, you need to carry your passport especially right now that there are random checks to check the visa validity. It is also good to know that there are banks that would not allow you to enter the premises if you have traveled recently abroad, so it is best to have your passport with you at all times.

I am aware of the entry requirements for foreigners entering Thailand, is there special consideration for those traveling with my Thai family or visiting my Thai family?

At the moment, you can enter Thailand. You just have to make sure that you have obtained a Thailand Pass, purchased COVID-19 Insurance, had a COVID-19 test and you will undergo a mandatory Test and Go or ASQ quarantine.

I have a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit expiring on April 24, due to my country’s travel restriction I cannot return to Thailand to renew it. What are my options?

If your country does not allow you to travel to Thailand or if your country of departure is under the travel ban, I regret to inform you that there is nothing you are able to do. It is not possible to renew it while you are outside Thailand and it is also not possible to renew it at the Thai embassy in your country. Should your visa and work permit expire while you are outside Thailand, you need to apply for a new non-immigrant B visa for you to enter Thailand and after you have entered Thailand, you can apply for a new work permit.

When do I need the embassy letter for the COVID-19 visa extension?

As of writing, the embassy letter is no longer required by the immigration office to receive the 60-day COVID-19 extensions.

I am looking for flights from Laos to Europe and this requires me to transit in Thailand. Do I need a Health Certificate when transiting? There are multiple different articles including the one on Thai Airways stating that a Health Certificate is required for transiting passengers.

As of writing, international passengers including transiting passengers are required to present a COVID-19 health certificate and negative COVID test result. If you are affected by this travel requirement, you may opt to postpone your travel or you may opt to book a flight that will not transit through Thailand. For the latest update, it is best to contact your airline.

I am a US citizen traveling from the US to Thailand via Hong Kong, am I subject to mandatory quarantine?

No, the mandatory quarantine is not required for any foreigner and Thai travelers entering Thailand via Hong Kong if you are fully vaccinated. I’m a French national. I have 60 days tourist visa, which is ending soon, but due to COVID-19, I am kind of reluctant to travel back to France. Is there any way that I can extend my visa for another 30 days?

Yes, any nationality holding a 60-day tourist visa entry stamp can extend for 30 days at the local immigration office. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport-size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 card, TM30 receipt from your hotel, and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

I am British and I entered Thailand on holiday on March 3 and am scheduled to leave on April 1. If my flight is canceled due to COVID-19, I may be forced to overstay my 30 days permit to stay until I have a rescheduled flight. Is this ok? If not, what should I do?

I am an American and I have a 30-day visa exemption that I extended for an extra 30 days. My current extension will expire on April 1, 2021. What are my options to stay in Thailand due to the travel restriction in other countries?

You have two options: 1.) You can extend your current extension for 30 days at your local immigration office. 2.) You can request a COVID-19 extension and you will be given a 60 days extension at your local Thai immigration office.

I have a non-immigrant O visa for having a Thai wife. It is a single entry visa. My 90-day entry stamp will expire in April and the money in my account has not seasoned yet for 2 months. What can I do?

Since you are legally married to a Thai national, you can apply for a 60-day extension for having a Thai wife. This extension will give you enough time for your funds to season for 2 months. After your funds have seasoned for 2 months, you may apply for a 1-year extension or marriage visa.

My work permit and my visa will expire by the end of the month. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, I am not able to return to my country. What are my options?

Since your visa and your work permit will expire, your only option for an extension of your stay in Thailand is to file for the 60-day COVID extension. You may apply for this extension on the last day of your permit to stay.

I am flying from the USA to Thailand via Hong Kong. Do I still need to present a health certificate and travel insurance?

At the moment, passengers entering Thailand need to obtain the Thailand Pass, purchase a COVID-19 insurance, book Test and Go Hotel for 1 night, or an ASQ Hotel for the 10-day quarantine (if not vaccinated), and obtain a COVID-19 medical certificate.

Can anyone advise what to do regarding my Non-B visa? My Non-B expired on 4th March. I have to pay a fine of 500 baht per day for overstay. The borders around Thailand are closed for me to renew it. I have requested a 30-day extension but was refused. They need my new contract for the new year. This is costing me an arm and a leg. What are my solutions?

The best solution for this is to avoid overstaying so that you will not get in trouble in the future. If you do not have a new contract from the school it is imperative for you to return to your home country until you have a new contract and apply for a new visa from the Thai embassy there. Once you have secured a new non-immigrant B visa, you may return to Thailand together with a copy of the health certificate and health insurance. Another option is to request a COVID extension while you are preparing the documents for your non-immigrant B visa. Some immigration offices are now issuing non-immigrant B visas.

I am a U.S. citizen. I arrived in Bangkok last March 9. My flight to Manila has been canceled on April 8. I am in Pattaya. Do I need a US embassy letter to extend my 45-day Travel Visa? Or can I just go to the Thai Immigration office in Pattaya to get an extension due to COVID-19?

No, you do not need an embassy letter at this time. Your current 45-day visa exemption stamp can be extended for an additional 30 days. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background, TM6 card, TM30 receipt from your hotel and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht.

Hello, I am a Russian national and have a 60-day TR visa already extended by 30 days – till the first week of June. Are these new regulations applicable for extended 60-day visas? – https://immigration.go.th/content/extend_alien?click=1.

Will I be able to extend this permitted period of 90days if I am not able to return back to my city of residence (Moscow) because of suspension of repatriation flights there? I left an application for repatriation flight on the governmental site (https://www.gosuslugi.ru/395103/1) but have not received any response.

If I can extend my visa more, what period I can apply for? What documents I should apply and how soon? Within 30 days of the visa expiry date? Should I pay a fee for this?

    • May 8, 2020

      Dear Vladimir,
If you have a “permitted until” stamp in your passport valid until June 2020, yes, you are able to stay in Thailand until July 31. You do not need to do any kind of visa application and there is no need for you to visit the immigration office.

At this time, it is not applicable because Thailand has a travel ban until May 31. We have to wait for the government announcement should the borders be open in June and to know more about the entry requirements.

Hello. I am a Belgian national living since 8 years in Thailand – Bang Saphan Prachuapkhirikan – with my Thai spouse and having a yearly non-immigrant O visa obtained in Hua Hin.
My current non-O visa expires on 23/07/2020. Should I renew it on due date or can I wait until 31/07/2020 ?
Also, I have to perform my 90-days notification of stay in Dan Sing Khan immigration office on 08/06/2020 ?
Should I do it on due date or can it also wait until 31/07/2020 so that I can make both formalities together in Hua Hin?

    • May 8, 2020

      Dear Jean-Marie,
For your 90-day reporting you may wait until July 2020. For your visa renewal, we recommend for you to do it on or before July 23, 2020. It is better to do it ahead of time to avoid the crowd on July 31.

    Dear Thai Embassy,

Are companies able to hire during this covid situation? In case a company would hire a professional providing all the necessary documents to legally work in Thailand, and due the flights ban until 31st of May, what are the steps to follow? In this case the professional they would hire is myself, on tourist visa under amnesty till July 2020. When is it possible to be hired? Thanks for the support

    • April 29, 2020

It would be difficult for Thai companies to hire foreigners at this time due to travel restrictions and also because the visa services of the Thai embassy were suspended. So if the foreigner is not in Thailand, the applicant must wait until the Thai Embassy in his/her country will open and accept visa applications. The applicant also have to wait until the borders or airports will open to foreigners.

Hi, I’m currently on an ED visa which I have extended twice already, my third extension is due in June. I was originally meant to be starting employment but obviously due to the situation I’ve been unable to leave Thailand to apply for the appropriate visa so have been unable to proceed with this, although the position is still available for me once the situation improves. Ideally I’d like to extend my ED visa for the final 90 days but I’m currently in a different province to where my school is located due to the closures. What would be my best option? Also, if I’m covered by the amnesty once it runs out and until July 31st, would I then be able to extend for the final 90 days after or would this then rule my ED visa invalid? Thank you.

    • April 28, 2020

If you avail the visa amnesty in June, you can stay only until July 31 and then you must leave Thailand to get a new visa. We recommend for you to get your final 90 days stamp of your ED visa so that you can stay until September. Although, we are not sure if you can extend since the schools are supposedly closed during this time.

      April 28, 2020

Okay no problem, thank you for the advice. I believe my school are willing to provide the documents so just depends on whether I can cross into another province and immigration accept the extension. Fingers crossed the situation eases in June anyway so I can apply for the Non-B. Thank you again.

application was made from here in Thailand via HMPO Application Centre in Chiang Mai Thailand (VFS Global) and the application was submitted on the 10th March 2020. The procedure that was explained to me by the Application Centre was that they submit the documents to HMPO Liverpool but they will return my old passport to me, which they did. The Application Centre told me that when my application has been processed and the new passport delivered back to them They will notify me to come and collect it and to bring my old passport with me and they will cancel it. That is the procedure that I have followed but I have now been contacted by HMPO Liverpool stating that they have now received my application to renew my passport but they can’t proceed until they receive my old passport. There was no explanation. So my question is: Is it legal to be in Thailand without a passport? Glenn Ross

    • April 28, 2020

No. it is not legal to stay in Thailand without the document proving you are legally allowed to stay in Thailand. In that case, you must have your passport and visa. If you have amiled it, you must have at least the copy of the passport and the copy of the visa.

My Question relates to travel by Thai citizen to travel from Hua Hin to family village ( Lam Sonthi, Chaiyaphum prov. ) . Her family (Her parents, her daughter and other members) reside there.
Q : Currently , other than night curfew ,are there restrictions on this type of travel, daylight hours ,from province to province ?

    • April 28, 2020

Aside from the curfew which is 10pm to 4am, there are travel restrictions or ban on entry in some provinces. Therefore it is best to check if your wife can exit Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and check the provinces that she will be passing through on the way to Chaiyaphum. There might be a lockdown in one of the provinces you will be passing through such as Nakhon Ratchasima.

Why stamp, under consideration stamp is not enough to get visa amnesty extension until 31 July?
Why do we need stamp, permitted to stay is also required.
    Kindly clarify.

    • April 28, 2020

It really depends on the immigration office where you got it. In Bangkok and Phuket, you need to close this visa stamp by returning to the immigration office to get the “permitted until” stamp. In Pattaya, there is no need to return. We recommend for you to contact the local immigration office that issued the stamp for you.

Thai nationals cannot enter Thailand by commercial flight until May 31. However, Thai nationals can enter Thailand by special repatriation flight even before May 31, they only need to contact Thai Embassy to be included in the special flights.

I hold italian passport and I am on amnesty till July 2020. In case I found a job and company will provide documents to legally work in Thailand, what are the procedures to follow?
    Thanks

    • April 27, 2020

If you are able to find a job, you will have leave Thailand and travel to a Thai embassy or consulate outside Thailand. You are unable to switch from a visa amnesty to a Non-immigrant visa in Thailand. You will apply for the non-immigrant B visa and use this visa to return to Thailand. Please know that right now international flights are banned from entering Thailand until May 31.

    Hello
I am a Canadian citizen in Chiangmai Thailand on a 6 month tourist visa which expired April 24. I went to Thai immigration, paid the 1900 baht and successfully extended my visa, receiving an “Extension of stay permitted up to” May 25 2020 stamp.
I have not found a suitable flight home and believe I could be here until mid to late June. Am I okay until July 31, or do I have to go back to immigration for an additional 30 days?

    • April 27, 2020

Since you have a “permitted until” stamp in your passport, you are able to stay in Thailand until July 31. You do not need to do any kind of visa application right now.

Hi, I have a Thai marriage visa that needs to be renewed by the 2nd July.

I will not be able to enter the country by that time due to entry restrictions and work commitments in Australia.

Is there any talk of the Thai government providing extensions in these circumstances until such time as one can safely return to Thailand?

    • April 27, 2020

At the moment, the Thai government has not issued guideline or information on the possibility of renewing your visa while you are outside Thailand. It is safe to assume that if you are unable to return to Thailand to renew your visa before it expires, you need to re-apply for the new visa starting with getting the Non Immigrant O visa at Thai embassy or consulate in Australia prior to returning to Thailand.

    Good evening from Hungary!
I am facing a little bit different kind of problem. I have travelled home to Hungary before the lockdown. I hold a non-B visa and have been working in Thailand for years. The problem is that my visa expires on the 31st of May, but my air ticket has been cancelled, and I have no time to get back to Thailand before 31st of May, therefore I cannot renew my non-B visa. Does the amnesty affects me as well, or will I lose my visa?

    • April 27, 2020

If your country does not allow you to travel to Thailand, I regret to inform that there is nothing you are able to do. It is not possible to renew it while you are outside Thailand and it also not possible to renew your visa at the Thai embassy in your country. Should your visa expire while you are outside Thailand and when the travel restrictions are lifted, you need to apply for a new non-immigrant B visa for you to enter Thailand and after you have entered Thailand.

I never went to immigration and got this “under consideration” stamp or “permitted until” stamp. Can you please clarify what these are? Was I supposed to get them? DO I need to go to immigration. Thanks

This is to inform you that the Thai government has given a visa amnesty to foreigners who are unable to travel out of Thailand or those who do not wish to apply for an extension at immigration office due to the risk of being infected with COVID-19. The visa relief is an automatic extension of your current permit to stay stamp until July 31.

Please clarify what I have to do? Do i sist at home or must I go in person to Immigration and get that stamp?

    • April 24, 2020

      Dear John,
If your stamp is “extension of stay permitted until” then you are good to stay until July 31. You do not need to do anything at this time. If you have a friend who has “under consideration” stamp, that person must visit the immigration office on the date specified on the stamp in order to receive the “extension of stay permitted until” stamp.

      Dear Rudy,
At the moment, the visa application service of the Thai embassies around the world have been suspended. Therefore, you may not be able to apply for the non-immigrant O visa to travel to Thailand in June. Also, for the month of May, commercial flights are ban from entering Thailand until May 31 and the government has not set some guidelines on who will be allowed to travel to Thailand for the month of June and July.

    • April 23, 2020

You will get the remaining days of the 30-day extension. Whether it is 1 day or 15 days, just go back to immigration office on the specified date so that you will receive the “permitted to stay” stamp. Once you have the “permitted to stay” stamp, you are allowed to stay in Thailand until July 31, 2020 regardless of the permit until date in your new stamp.

Actually the answer is no. Because tourists will not be allowed to enter in May and in June. Tourists may be allowed to enter sometime in August or September. If your current permit to stay is until April 24, then, you are covered by the visa amnesty. It means you can stay until April 30. You need to leave Thailand on or before April 30. If you cannot leave Thailand on that date, we have to rely on the government if there is a possibility of extension of this visa amnesty.

For business travel and any travel to Thailand, it is not allowed until April 30. At this time, there is no indication if the borders or airports will be open to short term visitors or long term residents. We need to wait until next week for the government announcement.

My visa expiry date was April 6th. I attended Phuket Town immigration on the April 7th and obtained a 15 day under consideration stamp, and was instructed to return on April 21st (tmrw). Amnesty was signed into law on April 9th, however everything i’ve seen so far implies that I still need to visit immigration to get the next 15 days stamped in (ie, even though my original expiry date fits into the amnesty dates, because I got the 15 day stamp, i still need to do something about it). Is this correct ? Just checking as Phuket’s sub-districts are on lockdown = may be difficult/impossible to reach immigration. Thanks in advance.

    • April 20, 2020

It is a case-to-case basis or it really depends on your local immigration office. it is best for you to check with Phuket Immigration office if you need to return tomorrow.

Thank you for the response. As a follow up in case the info is useful to anyone: I managed to get to Phuket Town immigration this morning, via about 6 checkpoints (every one people very friendly and efficient, and accepted the reason of visiting immigration). I went upstairs, handed over my passport and within 10 mins received the additional 15 day stamp, which implies that getting it extended in person was indeed necessary (?). Back on the 7th, there were hundreds of people getting 15 day stamps, so I was a little surprised to be the only person in the office at 11.45am today. I asked the officer whether I would need to do anything more if the emergency period was extended? He informed me I would need to return on May 6th with a new embassy letter, and begin again the same process as i did on April the 7th. I will wait to see what is decided on the 30th April, and then possibly email immigration for a written confirmation of his answer; firstly because i’ll probably need it to get an embassy letter this time, but secondly, because that answer to me seems a little harsh, given if i’d not done things properly and instead just overstayed, I’d be covered by the amnesty. Anyhow, hopefully this information is of use to someone. Thanks again for this service. Best Regards

Hi! Greetings! I am a Filipino citizen with a Thailand work permit and visa valid until May 15th.

I am currently on vacation here in the Philippines as the school where I’m teaching at canceled the summer class.

Due to our country’s Covid19 quarantine measures and travel restrictions, international flights will only resume on May 16th.

Please advise me on what will happen to my visa and work permit and what can I do since I will be returning to Bangkok as soon as the international flights from my country resumes operations.

May I also ask for the requirements needed for a foreign national with Thailand work permit and visa to enter Thailand next month.

Thank you so much for your time.

    • April 27, 2020

If your country does not allow you to travel to Thailand, I regret to inform that there is nothing you are able to do. It is not possible to renew it while you are outside Thailand and it also not possible to renew at the Thai embassy in your country. Should your visa and work permit expire while you are outside Thailand and the travel restrictions are lifted, you need to apply for a new non-immigrant B visa for you to enter Thailand and after you have entered Thailand, you can apply for a new work permit.

Hello Rex, thank you for having been so responsive. Do you have any update regarding travel restrictions? If the travel restrictions are lifted, can you tell me if the health insurance restriction still apply to foreigners coming in to Thailand who are working here?

    • April 29, 2020

Yes, the travel ban has been extended until May 31. We can assume that foreigners may be allowed to enter Thailand starting June and will be required to provide fit to fly certificate from Thai embassy abroad and will be required to be quarantined.

Hi there, first of all you have been extremely helpful with all your responses to all of our questions. I really appreciate that. To my original question below, do you know if there has been any update with a situation like mine? My wife and I are thinking to go out to the immigration office tomorrow to sort my visa. Would this be something you would recommend?

Q:Hi. Im am an American currently living in Bangkok,Thailand with my wife (Thai National) and 1 year old baby (American/Thai National). We have been living here for the past year now. I am currently on a “ED” visa which expires on April 24th and will be switching to a non “O” visa so we can get the Marriage Visa. With all the restrictions now in place where can I go outside of Thailand to receive the non “O” visa and come back to Thailand with no issues? Is there anyway to do this in Thailand now? I have the paper work done and the appropriate amount of money needed to be in the bank. Please help! Thank you!

    • April 20, 2020

It really depends now to your local immigration office. You may ask if you want switch now given that you still have more than 15 days remaining in your stamp.

    • April 20, 2020

If your visa will expire on May 2, you must leave Thailand on or before May 2. if there are no available flights for you to leave the country before May 2, you are able to request for visa extension at the immigration office or wait for the government announcement if there is a visa amnesty until May 31.

      Thank you for your response.

I went to the Chonburi office yesterday (21 April), and again got another “under consideration stamp”. The stamp expires on 3 May, which is Sunday. I need to go back again? I don’t really understand why I have to do this over and over again.

My understanding is, for those foreigners who are granted the automatic visa extensions after the announcement of the amnesty, they just need to sit back and wait, no need to pay, no 500 baht/day fines, no need to go back to the immigration office again and again.

However, I am sorry to tell this is not fair for me, or someone like me. Not because I paid 1900 baht, but I have to take the risk to go to the immigration office several times, I just want to stay at the hotel to avoid any infections, wait for the Thai airways to resume their flights, and return home.

Just like others, I heard that the amnesty will be extended for 3 more months until 31 July. This time, is it possible for the Kingdom to take care of the “under consideration stamp” group of people? No need for them to return back to the immigration office to get another under consideration stamp, just let us stay and wait? And please post more information about “under consideration stamps” on the official website. Please please please. I think we really need these. Please.

Anyway, thank you for your service and great help.

    • April 22, 2020

Yes, I understand your frustration. The Immigration office must be giving “permitted to stay” stamps instead of “under consideration” stamps. It defeats the purpose of the social distancing measures if you are still required to come back on the specific date. You are also correct that you are allowed to stay until July 31 due to the new visa amnesty. We recommend for you to call 1178 or 111 to file a complaint about the “under consideration” stamps being handed by the immigration office.

At this time, we hope that the crisis will be over by July. But we cannot say. if the borders and airports are already open at that time and Thailand will allow tourists to come, then you are able to visit Thailand at that time.

The Australian Embassy won’t do letters as they say everyone has extension of visa til 30 April. What can I do? I’ve messaged and emailed the Embassy but they all have the same response….no letters being done. My school advised me this afternoon that my visa wasn’t covered by the exemption til 30 April. Please advise. Thanks

    • April 20, 2020

Your ED Visa expired on April 18th, however, due to the visa amnesty, you are able to stay in Thailand until April 30. If you wish to stay beyond April 30, you need to wait for government announcement of the visa amnesty is extended or not. If it is not extended, you must leave Thailand on April 30 or you extend it on April 30 by presenting an embassy letter.

    Hi Rex!
I’ve changed my flight to arrive in Bangkok on May 5th assuming the borders are reopened to foreigners after April 30. Consulted my airline regarding the health certificate and insurance but they have no such requirement upon leaving US or transitioning through Japan. They are saying only Thai Airways is requesting said documents. Should I be worried if immigration asks me to provide these documents and I explain that I was not required to have them to board my flights?

    • April 17, 2020

Right now the health certificate and insurance are not required because there is a total travel ban for anyone entering Thailand including Thai nationals, effective until April 30. Should the travel ban is lifted on May 1, we still have to wait for the new guidelines from the government. We cannot assume that no documents will be required when the airports and borders will be operating again.

I would like to ask, under the amnesty, do I need to go back on 21 April? Or I can just sit back and wait until 30 April? I am a bit confused because no information related to the under consideration chop is indicated in the official immigration website. Hope that you can help me, or someone like me, to make things clear. Thank you very much for your help.

    • April 16, 2020

If you want to get the worth of what you paid for in March, it is better to go back on April 21. The immigration is empty so it is not a risk for COVID-19. You are correct that ” under consideration stamp” was not mentioned in the blanket visa amnesty, that is another reason to visit them on April 21. Although we can assume that you should be included also in the amnesty but it is now being debated because some offices will still require those with “under consideration stamp” to return to immigration office.

Right now, there is no government guidelines on who will be allowed to enter on May 1 or what documents are needed to enter Thailand starting May 1. The advice by the government is that it will be a slow transition, so it may be that the government will only allow those foreigners with work permit or Thai wife first and then later on allow other people.

No. The immigration cannot issue that type of visa. It must be issued by a Thai Embassy or Consulate outside Thailand. What you can only get right now is visa extension while you wait for the airports or border to be opened again. Right now, there is no chance at all to change to another type of visa.

Yes, your current stamp is covered by visa amnesty and you can stay until April 30. The validity of the visa amnesty relies on the effectivity of the emergency decree declared by the government. Should the government extend the emergency decree, the visa amnesty will be extended as well.

Only Thai nationals, foreign diplomats, foreigners with valid work permit, pilots and others permitted by the prime minister are allowed to enter Thailand starting May 1, 2020. Thank you for your help.. if they do not extend the amnesty for another 15 or 30 days … you said ….You can get another 30 days extension at immigration office with embassy letter. You can do it on May 2nd. My question is.. do I do all of this at the Thai immigration office and they will provide a letter for me????

      Many thanks

      David

    • April 13, 2020

You will request the embassy letter from your embassy and they will issue the letter by email. Once you have this letter, you will take it with you to the local immigration office. Right now the embassy will not issue the letter because of the visa amnesty.

I have a multi entry b-visa and a work permit. I have until 7/5/2020 to leave Thailand. What if the borders are still closed? Do I go to immigration?

    • April 13, 2020

If the borders will remain closed on May 7th, you have an option to ask your employer to apply for 1 year extension at the immigration office rather than doing the 90-day routine exit and re-entry.

    • April 13, 2020

It is not possible to switch from Working Visa into Dependent visa without leaving Thailand. BUT you can extend your stay while you wait for the airport to reopen so that you can leave Thailand and apply for the non immigrant O visa from a Thai embassy or consulate abroad.

Hello! Really appreciate your response 🙂 It helped us a lot.

When would we know when a tourist Visa can be used to come to Thailand? This is asking from a hong kong passport holder. As I need to take my important things from Phuket, they canceled my working permit without my notice, now my stuff is stuck there and even still renting my apartment. Any suggestions you could give? Thank you so much!

    Have a great day

Hi , just was wondering when you think the visa on arrival will start again in Thailand as I am coming up from Bali May 1st to connect with my flight to London in May 7th.. thank you for your help

    • April 16, 2020

Visa on Arrival for Chinese and Indians is canceled until September 30, 2020. So if you have a transit flight in Bangkok in May, please get in touch with the Thai Embassy or Consulate in your current location. If you are British, you also have to get in touch with the Thai consulate in Bali.

Hello, I’m Swedish citizen and Im having 90 days tourist visa since 11th Feb (11Feb – 10th May 2020) now Ive already used 60 days and I know normally I should go to the migration office and pay 1900baht for another 30days extension. Now since this new ‘Visa Amnesty” , do I still have to do the same or my visa is automatically extended till 30th April? and what should I of after 30th April ?

    • April 13, 2020

You get an automatic extension until April 30. You have to wait for further announcement before April 30 if the visa amnesty will be extended. If it will not be extended, you need to visit the immigration office on April 30 to check your visa extension options.

Yes, you may apply for a tourist visa from Thai Embassy in Brussels. Please know that, right now, all visa services by the embassy has been suspended. You may wait for a a month or two before the embassy will start issuing tourist visas.

I am a UK Citizen and Resident of Bahrain. My 3rd attempt at leaving Thailand is scheduled for 19th April when the Bangkok airport re-opens. The flight was booked 2 days ago.
I stay in Pattaya and from yesterday Pattaya is under lock-down. I understand that I will need a permit to leave the city on the afternoon of 19th and I assume that my taxi driver will need a permit to return that evening.
Please explain the process for obtaining the permit to travel?

At the moment our firm does not have the information on how to obtain a pass for you to travel from Pattaya to the Bangkok Airport. I recommend for you to contact the local police station to assist you on this. I believe the lockdown has been suspended.

Hello, I extended my visa ‘legally’ on 7th of April for 1900 baht (my last money) because I respect your laws. Now I have no money, sleeping on the streets. YOU GIVE AMNESTY TO PEOPLE WHO DID NOT EXTENDED THEIR VISA. You are doing wrong to good people. I WANT MY MONEY BACK. I want a refund. You gave amnesty to illegal people. I respected Thailand government and now you don’t respect me. I HAVE NO MONEY. Thank you.

    • April 13, 2020

This page has been maintained by Siam Legal, we are not connected to any immigration office. If you have paid for the 1,900 Thai baht immigration fee or even the overstay penalty, that fee is non-refundable. The visa amnesty was enacted and came into law effective on April 9th, therefore it was not covered back then. Please call the immigration call center at 1178 regarding your request for a refund. Thank you.

There has been conflicting reports as to how some immigration officers are interpreting the blanket visa amnesty. Since you have an “under consideration” stamp, we recommend for you to check with your local immigration office if you still need to go there on April 20 or not.

    • April 10, 2020

Please be informed that Thailand has closed all land, sea and air borders. Only Thai nationals, foreign diplomats, foreigners with valid work permit, shippers, drivers, pilots and others permitted by the prime minister are allowed to enter Thailand. This is effective until April 30. In your case, since you do not have a work permit but only a non-immigrant O visa, you may return to Thailand in May but please do check if this travel ban will be extended or lifted.

I just renewed my work permit last March in Bangkok, now valid until March 2021. My non-B visa extension is valid until May 2019 only. Due to current situtation, I left Bangkok 3rd week of March and cannot come back to Thailand due to travel restriction but my company allowed me to work from home.
I have a flight going back to Thailand in 3rd week of April. If the flight ban is extended again, can I instead apply for a new Non-B visa in the Thai Embassy in HK instead of extending it in Thailand?

I have a Non B visa with a stamp from the airport permitted to stay until the 4th of May 2020. I was asked to sign a resignation letter on the 26th March 2020 as the company halted business due to Covid-19.

Do I have visa amnesty or what is my current visa status and how do I proceed with this matter?

Your advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

I am in Pattaya and just this morning April 9, went to the Jomtien Immigration in Chonburi. I was told by the immigration officer there is now a “Visa Waiver from March 26 – April 30.” No paperwork was required to be turned in and no 1900 baht fee was collected. He looked at my passport and told me I can just go home and did not have to wait in any lines. I had all my papers including hotel receipt for the next 30 days, map to hotel, flight cancellation letter, and Embassy letter in hand, but was told it is unnecessary for now. My visa exemption stamp was to expire April 10th, so does this mean I just have to return back on April 30th and not have to worry about an “overstay fine?”

    PS:
By the way in Bangkok, I want to share that if you an extension due to Covid-19, you have to go to the Central Investigation Bureau in Muang Thong Thani estate in Nonthaburi office, not the one in Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Road. I wasted a lot of time and money because I did not know that they do not provide the same services.

    • April 9, 2020

You can extend your Non Immigrant B visa for 1 year in Thailand if your employer can do the paperwork and submit on or before April 10. However if you cannot do that, you can extend for 7 days and leave Thailand or your can extend for 30 days due to COVID 19 and also leave Thailand after 30 days. If you want to do the 30 days extension, please contact your embassy or consulate in Thailand to provide a letter stating that you are affected by the current COVID-19 crisis and that your flights has been canceled. The embassy will request the immigration office to extend your stay for another 30 days.

If the government does not extend the emergency decree and the visa amnesty, you need to leave Thailand on April 30. You can go to Laos if the borders are open at that time or go back to your home country in order to get a new visa. If the airports or borders will still be closed, it is very likely that the amnesty may be extended.

If you are unable to travel out of Thailand before May 6th, you are able to extend for 30 days at local immigration office in order for you not to overstay. I am not sure what kind of solution you are looking for. I believe the important issue here is that you do not overstay after May 6th.

I have the necessary Health Insurance and a valid 6-month, Multiple-entry Tourist Visa for Thailand that was issued in Los Angeles on arch 10. I paid $200 for that visa. Now the time is ticking on the visa. It’s impossible to get the COVID-19 test in Japan. Will the Thai Consulate extend my visa? I cannot go all the way back to the Thai Consulate Los Angeles. Is it possible to get an estimated time when Thailand will lift its ban on foreign tourists.
