Travel to Thailand from France

In traveling to Thailand, a French citizen does not need a Thailand tourist visa. France is among the 64 countries listed in the Visa Exemption under the Visa Exemption Rule and Bilateral Agreement between the two countries. They are allowed to enter the border of Thailand and stay for 30 days maximum.

Another good news that a French citizen might like to hear is that they are allowed to enter and stay in Thailand without requiring them to be locked up in a hotel room. With the Sandbox program of Thailand, they are given the option to enjoy their first 7 days on an island (Phuket Sandbox and Samui Plus).

Thailand, Orange/Amber listed Country

Countries with active viral circulation in controlled proportions are placed in an orange/amber list. And according to Ministère De L’intérieur (Ministry of Interior), Thailand is considered to be an orange/amber-listed country.

A French citizen traveling to orange/amber listed country, Thailand, is allowed.

Border Control for Returning and Leaving Travelers

To deal with the virus and prevent the spread of variants, temporary border controls are required on both entering and leaving the country by French authorities. Each time a traveler crosses the border, he/she is required to follow three regulations:

  • Mobility Regulation. The mobility regulations where travelers define the permissible compelling reasons for traveling that allow admission into and out to France in light of the present border closure situation.
  • Health Control Measures. Health control measures include tests before and/or upon arrival in France, and a 7-day isolation period.
  • Right to Stay. All returning travelers, including foreign travelers, must present a valid passport at the French border, as well as the usual required documents: proof of resources and accommodation, as well as a short-stay visa if their nationality requires it; a long-stay visa if they intend to settle in France; and a residence permit if they intend to reside in France.

Restrictions in Leaving France

The restrictions imposed by French authorities to French travelers leaving France to the orange/amber listed country, Thailand, depended on whether they are vaccinated or unvaccinated.

Vaccinated French Travelers

If you are a vaccinated French traveler traveling to Thailand, there are no applied restrictions for you in leaving the country.

Unvaccinated French Travelers

If you are an unvaccinated traveler traveling to Thailand, you can only travel if you have a compelling reason to travel.

The compelling reasons for a French traveler to be allowed and granted to leave the country are the following:

  • Taking part in a student exchange program.
  • A judicial or administrative authority has summoned you.
  • Professional high-level athletes participating in Ministry of Sports-approved meetings.
  • A critical medical situation has arisen (for the person as well as an accompanying person if their presence is essential).
  • Remaining in the territory where the person is located is either legally or economically impossible. Putting a deportation order into effect.
  • Returning French citizens and foreign nationals, as well as their spouses (married, civil partners, and partners) and children, to their country of residence or origin.
  • A health or research professional who is involved in the COVID-19 fight or who is involved in crucial health-related cooperation initiatives.
  • Assignments that are critical to the continuation of commercial activity, require a physical presence on the spot, cannot be postponed, and whose delay or cancellation would have severe effects or be impossible (including transport professionals).
  • A direct-line family member has died (grandparents, parents, children, brothers, and sisters). Direct-line family members visiting a person in a life-threatening condition (grandparents, parents, children, and siblings). Traveling abroad in order to exercise custody rights recognized by a court judgment.
  • One-time missions relating to the exercise of public authority (such as diplomatic missions and missions critical to the continuation of operational contracts of the armed forces or military corps) that cannot be postponed or deferred.

If a French citizen has a compelling reason listed above, please print and fill up this Certificate of International Travel to Orange/Amber listed Country.

The compelling reasons listed above may require proof from a French citizen leaving the country to be checked by French authorities before departing. The required proof can be found on the Certificate of International Travel.
